Only 10 minutes away from the main town but shrewdly secluded from the crowd, Café Kalimpong is a rendezvous to enjoy the warm company of friends, good food, and clouds rolling amidst Himalayan ranges. On clear days, you can also raise a toast to the glittering view of Kalimpong town ! Our aesthetics are minimal and homely, breathing in harmony with the naturally scenic disposition of the Kalimpon

g hills. Our cozy outdoor space overlooks the main town and glows up in warm lights against the breezy evening sky. Here we’ve assembled a laid-back library with some of our favourite books that you can read, refer, or research over a strong cup of coffee. Cafe Kalimpong is not just a place where you enjoy good food, it is a safe haven for artists, musicians, gamers, poets and writers. We’re always abuzz here with the several of our local artists and their creations.

Maghe Sankranti greetings to all

Maghe Sankranti is celebrated on the first day of Magh. Sankranti significance is to welcome the warmer days of Spring after the cold Winter months. Maghe Sankranti is similar to solstice festivals in other religious traditions.
The food we eat on the day of Sankranti is very popular. Families get together during the day and eat meals together. Furaula (Buckwheat pakoras), Sesame seed laddus, molasses, ghee, sweet potatoes and yam / tubers are included as Sankranti’s special food.

Maghe Sankranti is more than just a seasonal festival; it is a celebration of nature’s cycle, health, community, and cultural identity. By honoring ancient traditions, enjoying nourishing foods, and strengthening family bonds, Nepali people celebrate the hope and warmth that follow winter’s end.

Adding to our growing list of Kalimpong’s feathered wonders
Where every bird carries a story, and every story belongs to the hills. Cradled in the Eastern Himalayas—where misty ridges blur into dense forests and prayer flags sway through bamboo groves—Kalimpong is a sanctuary for birdlife. With biodiversity jewels like Neora Valley National Park, these hills wake up each day to nature’s own soundtrack.

Blue Whistling Thrush — the unofficial morning alarm of the mountains

Dressed in deep indigo with a dusting of starlike speckles, this shy yet bold bird is famous for its powerful, ringing whistles that cut through the early morning mist. Long before phones buzz or towns stir, the Blue Whistling Thrush is already on duty, calling out from rocky streams and forest edges.
A bird of shadows and spray, it is rarely found far from the rushing waters of mountain torrents.

If you’re up early in Kalimpong and hear a clear, haunting whistle drifting through the mist chances are, the mountains have already sounded their snooze-free wake-up call

Meet Rani Chari – The Queen Bird of the Hills 👑

Adding to our growing list of Kalimpong’s feathered wonders where every bird carries a story, and every story belongs to the hills. Nestled in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas, where misty ridges melt into dense forests and prayer flags flutter through bamboo groves, this region is a true haven for birdlife. Biodiversity hotspots like Neora Valley National Park make these hills a paradise for birdwatchers and seekers of quiet wonder from around the world.

Scarlet Minivet (Pericrocotus speciosus)

The Scarlet Minivet is a striking forest bird found across the Darjeeling hills and Sikkim, within the Eastern Himalayan region. Locally known as Rani Chari (Queen Bird), the name especially honours the yellow-hued female, regarded as the “Queen,” while the brilliant scarlet-red male is often seen as the “King” together creating one of the most vivid contrasts in the forest canopy.

This species inhabits broad-leaved and mixed forests, forest edges, and areas near tea gardens, typically between 600 and 2,000 metres in elevation. The male displays a dazzling scarlet body with black wings and tail, while the female appears in shades of yellow to orange, accented with darker wings.

Scarlet Minivets are active, social, and vocal birds, usually seen in pairs or small groups as they forage among the treetops. They often join mixed-species feeding flocks, moving swiftly through the upper canopy in search of insects, which they catch mid-air or glean from foliage.

Their sharp, whistling calls frequently echo through mist-laden forests long before the birds are spotted. In the hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim, the vibrant colours and lively presence of the “King” and “Queen” make the Scarlet Minivet one of the most admired and enchanting forest birds of the region.
