Small tea gardens, under 300 hectares, are everywhere in Assam, Tripura, Dooars, and Darjeeling. They suffer higher losses and lower profits compared to big gardens. Every year bushes die — from drought, water logging, or natural causes.
Even in good years, small gardens struggle to infill and extension works because other expenses take priority.
If a buyer wants to purchase the entire stock directly to keep his packaging factory running, the garden cannot sell — because of the Tea Board’s mandate.
Do other industries face such restrictions? Doubtful!

On 17 April, we saw a news that NETA, BCP, ABLTMA and NBTPWA applied to PM Modi to allow tea gardens to allow them sell directly to whole sellers or whoever they want.
Tea gardens producing tea, taking the losses on them, when the whether is adverse or market collapsed. Loss in a tea garden is now more common then making profit.
So why is there interference and control by tea board. From the birth of tea board, it is always slow in response.
Tea Board should work as a support for encouraging export, quality improvement, innovation in plant technology etc.
It must not hinder viability of a tea garden.
Surely Tea Board should check and audit where it facilitates financial grants, loans or reimbursements.
But should interfere in other people's investments.

Tea was wildly growing in Assam and China. China understood the medicinal value of tea. Gradually they started organized tea plantations. They were intelligent people. They sold tea to all countries including British, but never shared the technique of tea growing and processing.
To break the Chinese monopoly on tea, the British began secret missions to smuggle tea seeds and knowledge out of China.
So they engaged a Botanist Robert Fortune for that. He in turn smuggled out thousands of tea seeds and plants from China to Assam.
Those plants did not survive well in Assam.
But self grown tea worked wonder in Assam for Assam as well for world tea.
Chinese seeds and plants worked very nicely in Darjeeling and produced, world wide highly appreciated Darjeeling Tea.

In our North Eastern States, the sun rises early. The european planters started a system called Bagan Time, which was set one hour ahead of Indian Standard Time. So when it was 8 AM in the rest of India, it was considered 9 AM in the tea gardens of Assam. This system was still in use even about 20 years back.
Because there was no public announcement system, the Line Chowkidar had the duty to pass on all instructions from the management to the workers. Before making any announcement, he would always ask the managers, “Saab, Bagan Time or Indian Time?”
One of his main jobs was to wake up the workers early in the morning. He would shout loudly across the labour lines, announcing the time so that everyone got up and started their day.
But slowly, as the senior planters retired, the new generation of planters did not see any benefit in keeping two different times in one place. So the practice of Bagan Time faded away.

When we the outsiders, go to a tea garden to see how tea is made, when we walk through the plantation path, among lakhs of bright, healthy and growing tea bushes, it excites us.
If its a non working, we find peace every where, perhaps, some of the visitors thinks what a wonderful surroundings, and what they are missing in their life everyday.
Peace all around the tea plantation is also experienced by all the personnel of tea gardens in a non working day.
In a normal working day, this vast plantation becomes office and working place for every personnel there.
With all the work pressure, target pressure, mistakes and supervising all the area and workers increases anxiety not peace. But all anxiety is cleared at the end of the day when personnel see that leaf carrying vehicles go back to factory with full load of fresh and soft leaf.

With Bihu festivities are concluding, Assam tea gardens are mostly started working from today. Now entire garden's focus shifts entirely to the bushes as the new plucking season officially already has begun.
After the long winter dormancy, the 'First Flush' represents the very first growth of tender leaf, bright in color, full of flavor, soft as cotton and high in market value.
For a planter be it the garden Manager or the ground level workers, seeing these fresh green shoots is the ultimate reward for the five-year wait a sapling requires to mature.
Every cup of Assam tea you enjoy today started with a decision made years ago to clear the jungle and plant with hope. As the 2026 season kicks off, we all, a planter or not, look forward to a year of quality, steady markets, and favorable humid with nice heat.

As we talk about minimum 20 years to build a standard tea garden and then continuous journey of Garden Management, Staff and workers of growing, developing and maintaining a tea garden every day. Bohag Bihu is a well-deserved break for every personnel of the tea garden, whose dedication turns a jungle into an 'eye-soothing' estate.
In Bihu, we not only celebrate animal, earth and farming practices, we also celebrate spirit of the people who brave the unpredictable Assam weather, dense jungle and isolated places from the main locality.
A tea jungle can grow on its own but not the tea garden without the culture and resilience of its community and its surroundings.
Most of the Assam tea gardens will start working and working hard again from today.

Bohag Bihu is the heart of Assam’s culture, and it begins every year around mid-April, this time on 14-4-26. It is not just a festival, but a way of life that touches every household. Tea gardens also join in the celebration, usually giving at least two days of holiday so that workers can enjoy with their families.
This Bihu marks the start of the agricultural season, when land is prepared for sowing with hopes of a good harvest. Like many Hindu traditions, it honours all forms of life — cattle, humans, and plants — showing respect to nature’s cycle. People clean their homes, wear new clothes, prepare special food, and exchange gifts of love and goodwill.
For tea gardens, Bohag Bihu also signals the beginning of the new plucking season. Just as farmers look forward to a better crop, tea planters welcome fresh leaves with the expectation of a fruitful year. In this way, agriculture and tea both move together, guided by the rhythm of the same festival.

It takes minimum 5 years to get return from the investment made for tea sapling planting done in the first year. But the tea company cannot finish entire planting in a year. To reach a reasonably optimum size of plantation, a garden should be 350 hectors to 500 hectors.
If the company is able to plant 20 hectors to 25 hectors yearly, it will take 15 to 20 years to make a standard and optimum sized tea garden.
This 20 years, did not went smoothly for any tea gardens. Manpower was always short. Whether was always unpredictable. It was always more rain or less rain. Tea market was never steady. Sometimes gardens earned a lot, sometime suffered losses.
But surely, overall made huge profits, otherwise we would not have seen such lovely, eye soothing gardens in Assam and other parts of India.

A tea garden takes many years to grow and become ready. The owner or company gets land from the Government, usually deep inside a jungle. There may be another tea garden nearby, but never a town — only a small village could be around 3 / 5 kilometres away.
The owner first clears the jungle and builds basic things like drains, roads, and houses for staff. These works can be done only in winter, not during the rainy season.
After the basic setup, tea plants are brought from other gardens. Planting starts in April or May, just after the first rains. The tea plants become mature after five years.
For the first three years, the owner gets no income from the plants and must keep investing. After three years, the plants start to sustain themselves, and after five years, they begin to give returns.
This is the ideal situation. In real life, there can be droughts, floods, hail, pests, wild animals, or shortage of workers.
If everything goes well, the tea plants can keep producing for 50 to 60 years.
