夕暮れ

お散歩に出られる季節になりました。
日に日に陽が伸びていって、
ついつい帰るのを忘れてしまいそうです。

ここには、湖と綺麗な空気と、循環する森があります。
そして、湖に向かって投げても投げてもなくならない、
たくさんの石があります。

投げるのを失敗しても、
まだまだ湖畔は続いています。

Dusk

It's the season for evening walks again.

The days are growing longer,
and sometimes it feels easy to forget to head home.
Here, we have the lake, the clear air, and the ever-changing forest.

And there are countless stones to throw toward the water—no matter how many you toss, there are always more.

Even if your throw goes astray,
the lakeshore still stretches on.

裏山

約200段。

この前、ゲストの親子と一緒に数えながら登ったところ、186段ほどありました。

なかなか時間と体力がないとたどり着けません。

でも、そのぶん山の上はとても静かです。

下の方から参拝の鈴の音が聞こえてきたり、鳥の声や葉の揺れる音が聞こえてきたり。

少しのあいだ目を閉じてみるのも面白いです。

そして目を開くと、色や光、風や緑をより強く感じられる気がします。

The hill behind the shrine

About 200 steps.

The other day, I counted them together with a guest and their child as we climbed, and it turned out there were around 186 steps.

It takes a little time and effort to reach the top.

But that's exactly why it's so quiet up there.

You can hear the sound of shrine bells drifting up from below, along with birdsong and the rustling of leaves.

It's interesting to close your eyes for a moment.

And when you open them again, the colors, light, wind, and surrounding nature somehow feel even more vivid.

秘密基地のような場所

十和田神社には裏山があります。

この2〜3年ほど、登っていく階段が傷んでいたため、案内がなければ訪れることが難しい場所でしたが、昨年から工事が進み、今年からは誰でも登れるようになりました。

十和田神社は、十和田湖にふたつある半島のひとつ、中山半島の西側に位置しています。

裏山に登ると、普段はなかなか見ることのできない中湖の景色が広がります。いつも風が抜けていて、とても気持ちの良い場所です。

さらにハシゴを登ると、大きな岩が現れます。
その上に腰を下ろし、風に吹かれながら、ただ自然の中に身を置く。

そんな時間がおすすめです。

A place like a secret hideaway

Behind Towada Shrine, there is a small hill.

For the past two or three years, the stairs leading up had fallen into disrepair, making it difficult to visit without local guidance. After restoration work over the past year, the path is now open again and accessible to everyone.

Towada Shrine stands on the western side of the Nakayama Peninsula, one of the two peninsulas that extend into Lake Towada.

From the hill behind the shrine, you can enjoy a view of the lake's central basin—a perspective that few visitors get to see. A gentle breeze is almost always flowing through this place, making it wonderfully comfortable.

Climb a little higher and you'll find a large rock waiting above.

Sit there, feel the wind, and simply immerse yourself in the surrounding nature.
It's a wonderful place to spend a quiet moment.

循環のはじまり

お庭をつくってから、少しずつ落葉が積もり、自然なマルチができあがってきました。

年々、日当たりなどの条件に応じて、下層植生も少しずつ変化しています。

いつからか、イチリンソウやウワバミソウ（ミズ）、クサソテツ（コゴミ）が春の訪れを知らせてくれるようになりました。

そして今年は、コゴミの領地が広がり、イタヤカエデの実生もあちこちで見られます。

庭の中で植物たちが少しずつ場所を見つけ、増え、移り変わっていく様子に、とてもワクワクしています。

来年はどんな景色になっているだろう。

そんなことを思いながら、お庭の変化を楽しんでいます。

The beginning of a cycle

Since creating the garden, fallen leaves have gradually accumulated, forming a natural layer of mulch.

Year by year, the understory vegetation has also been changing, shaped by sunlight and other conditions.

At some point, spring began announcing itself through the arrival of Ichirinso, Uwabamisō (Japanese waterleaf), and Kogomi (ostrich fern fiddleheads).

This year, the kogomi seem to be expanding their territory, and seedlings of Itaya maple have appeared throughout the garden.

Watching plants find their places, spread, and slowly reshape the landscape is endlessly exciting.

I often find myself wondering what the garden will look like next year.

For now, I'm simply enjoying its gradual transformation.

十和田湖に来るようになってから、モミジにはたくさんの種類があることを知りました。そして、モミジは大きく括るとカエデの仲間であることも。

お庭には複数のカエデがありますが、いまだに名前のわからない木があります。

葉の切れ込みが深く、名前に「モミジ」が付く仲間のような気はするのですが……。

オオモミジなのか、ヤマモミジなのか。それとも別のカエデなのか。

しっかり調べればわかるのかもしれませんが、そのうち何かのきっかけで答えが見つかるだろうと思い、そのままにしておくことにしました。

それから5年。

きっかけは、まだ来ません。

After coming to Lake Towada, I learned that there are many different kinds of momiji (Japanese maples). I also learned that “momiji” is, broadly speaking, one group within the larger maple family.

There are several maples in our garden, and one of them still remains a mystery to me.

Its leaves are deeply cut, and it feels like it belongs to the group that carries the name “momiji”—but I’m not quite sure.

Is it an Ōmomiji? A Yamamomiji? Or perhaps another kind of maple altogether?

I could probably find the answer if I studied it carefully. But I thought that, sooner or later, some clue would naturally come along and reveal its name.

That was five years ago.

The clue still hasn’t arrived.

お庭には、複数のブナの木があります。

展葉のころになると、新芽を覆う産毛が光を受けてキラキラと輝き、とても可愛いです。

この毛も、葉が育つにつれて少しずつ目立たなくなっていくのでしょうか。

季節とともにどのように変化していくのか、今年はゆっくり観察してみたいと思います。

There are several beech trees in our garden.

Around the time the leaves unfold, the fine hairs covering the young leaves catch the light and sparkle beautifully. They are surprisingly charming.

I wonder if these delicate hairs gradually become less noticeable as the leaves mature.

This year, I'd like to take my time and observe how they change through the seasons.

冬のあいだ新芽を守ってきた芽鱗（がりん）。
春になると役目を終え、新芽の下に薄くぶら下がっています。

やわらかな新芽と芽鱗が、
yamajuの庭のあちこちで見られるようになりました。

オープンした当時、ここは締め固められた更地でした。
そこから、春の訪れを知らせてくれる庭へと育ってきたことを思うと、うれしい限りです。

今年も一本、庭に木を植えました。
数年後には、エントランスの風景をつくる一本になってくれますように。

The bud scales that protected new leaves throughout the winter have now completed their role.
In spring, they hang delicately beneath the emerging leaves.

Soft new growth and bud scales can now be seen throughout the yamaju garden.

When yamaju first opened, this place was nothing more than a compacted vacant lot.
It brings us great joy to see how it has grown into a garden that quietly announces the arrival of spring.

This year, we planted another tree in the garden.
We hope that, in a few years, it will become one of the trees that shapes the landscape at the entrance.
