Java Creative Café

Java Creative Café Java Creative Café is a café and community art space serving Phnom Penh since 2000 “Java” is a slang for coffee and that’s where our story begins.

In 2000 we opened our first location with a small team of seven serving fresh coffee and baked goods. Since then we’ve expanded our menu from breakfast to dinner, while staying true to our food philosophy. We make every dish in our kitchen from only fresh ingredients. We have pioneered a creative enterprise model in Cambodia, using resources of the café to support non-profit and independent art pr

ograms. Across the three spaces, it presents a curated series of exhibitions, Creative Generation award program and live performances in a black box theater.

It was a very moving and beautiful event this last sunday with the exhibition opening of "ColourMoves" by Mylyn Sandoval and the film screening of "Amelia" by Deryn Sandoval. Java is very proud to provide the space for our creative community and we feel honored that this mother-daughter artistic team shared their work at our space.

The exhibition is still on view this week, and you can catch the film screening again at 6pm on 17 May! See you at Java!

A big part of being a mother is thinking about and often worrying about the lives of our children. While also taking care of the many things that require our attention (careers, parents, home life, etc.).

So for Mother's Day we asked a few mothers at Java "what is their wish for their children?" Here is what they said.

A Celebration of Women in Art – Java Art Archive

As we continue this series—and with Mother’s Day approaching—we’re also recognizing the many ways women hold creative, intellectual, and personal worlds at once. Today we feature Tara Tran.

Tara Tran is a historian, writer, and curator whose work draws on feminist, decolonial, and intersectional approaches to explore memory, identity, and Southeast Asian histories. As a daughter of Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees, her research and projects center storytelling as a way to unpack both personal and collective narratives.

Alongside her research and curatorial work, Tara is also a working mother—navigating the demands of care and creation while continuing to produce deeply thoughtful, critical work.

At Java, we hosted her event “I, Neang Totim,” an invitation into a layered historical moment—where a dancer’s accusation in 1898 set off a complex negotiation between Cambodian and French authorities around protection, power, and freedom. Through conversation and participation, the work opened space to question how these dynamics continue to resonate today.

For this print series, Georg Whelan has highlighted a part of his practice that is centered on mindful mark-making. A process that opens up new possibilities through play and connection with the material, while staying present in the moment. "Ox Herding II" brings together poetry and imagery that guide us through the classic Zen Buddhist parable. The artist offers the viewer to embark on a similar journey of reflection and mindfulness.

Join us for the exhibition opening 6pm Saturday, 9 May 2026 at Java Creative Cafe Toul Kork https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZFcNCFgRy84W847P8
