LIZARD JOES originally opened i
n 2011 as a Seaside Texas BBQ and Yucatan Seafood restaurant and Chelem's first Live Music venue. The name, "Lizard Joes" was derived from the owner's nickname "Lizard" and our amigo "Joe King Carrasco" known as the Tex-Mex King of Rock & Roll, who inspired us to open the venue and assisted in the design and concept of the venue in support of Live Music. We closed our doors June 2017 to return to the USA and provide our family with the support that could not be provided remotely. We rented our location for a couple of years, while we traveled back and forth as needed and continued to provide Live Music for the new venue for most of the time they were open. In 2019, we returned to the Yucatan. The renters vacated the property and we resumed control over the venue. After making many needed repairs and 2 years of the COVID pandimic we reopened our doors in March of 2022 with a new business model and menu. YUCATEXA
When Lizard Joes closed in 2017, Lizard Joes worked with the employees to help them open their own businesses. Maria & Kathy were sisters that worked for Lizard Joes almost the entire time Lizard Joes was open. These local Chelem sisters took the "Yucatexa" portion of the Lizard Joes menu, built a kitchen connected to their mother's home and opened thier own small business, "Yucatexa" with a menu that represents a fusion of Tex-Mex and Yucatan ingredients, spices and flavors. Their hard shell tacos provided them a niche that allowed their business to grow and thanks to the wonderful people (foriegners & locals) were able to continue to feed and provide for the 10 children under their care during the pandemic. They actually earn more income than being employees of someone else. In fact, their taco sales have provided them the ability to send the first member of the family to ever graduate high school (with help from the Chelem Apollo Program) to college. In March 2022, Yucatexa agreed to partner with Lizard Joes and moved their operations to Lizard Joes kitchen as independent operators. LIZARD JOES YUCATEXA
We are actually two separate businesses. LIZARD JOES owns the location, serves our signature beverages and provides live entertainment on occassion. The Beachfront Restaurant & Bar is also available for Private Events. YUCATEXA owns the kitchen and thier food represents a fusion of Yucatecan and Tex-Mex Traditions by fusing Yucatecan and Tex-Mex ingredients and family recipes made from scratch using freshly prepared meats and vegetables. Their business, menu and opportunites for better lives for their children continues to grow. Both businesses look forward to serving you. Come for the Food ... Stay for the Fun.
