Call it good luck or being in the right place at the right time.
I recently guided some guests to the magnificent sites of Kohunlich/Dzibanche /Kinichna
Thank goodness a degree of normality is returning to this part of the world, on all 3 sites, INAH, was back, at work.
It was nice to watch the restauration artists working on the masks at Kohunlich, they have not been there for work for 4/5 years. there are 8 masks on 4 platforms, of the sun god kinichna, truly spectacular.
The masks and how they are protected has been of concern to me for many years, I believe they should be protected as the Stucco frieze is at Balamku !!!
At Dzibanche they were continuing work on the acropolis, which has a lot of stucco and paint and again needs better protection, the site though is so different, for years I have called it my “Indiana Jones” site, just plazas and temples one after another, in a lush hardwood jungle and always howler monkeys, and no one else there.
