In the bustling atmosphere of the old Hokkien jetties, flavor wasn’t just about the food, it was about the spirit of the catch. At Root House, we’re bringing those stories back to the table with a vibrant, modern twist on a nostalgic favorite.

Our Hokkien Rainbow Prawn Chee Cheong Fun is a tribute to the sea and the heritage that sustains us. We start with silky, steamed rice rolls laid under a bed of succulent prawns, elevated by a rich rainbow prawn sauce, the nostalgic crunch of crispy preserved radish, and a vibrant drizzle of our chilli oil.

A tribute to the quay, the kitchen, and the stories passed down through generations. Come have a taste!

A landmark of Penang’s colonial soul, reimagined.

Nestled within the UNESCO-listed 1926 Heritage Hotel, Roots House by gēn 根 breathes new life into the former quarters of British immigration officers. Today, these storied walls host a different kind of movement: the fluid migration of flavors and culture.

The experience is choreographed in three acts:

The Dining Hall: The heart of the journey, reflecting the “home” created by Malaysia’s major dialect groups.
Architecture is more than a shell here; it is a beautifully knotted narrative of arrival, adaptation, and the eventual return to one’s roots.

The Lounge: An airy tribute to British colonial elegance, bathed in the soft light of French windows.

The Bar: Where tradition meets industrial modernity at a granite-clad Chinese counter.
