Tteokguk is a traditional Korean dish, often served during the New Year. It's made by boiling chewy rice cakes in water and it's a perfect way to start off the New Year with a satisfying meal.
This dish isn't just your average soup, it's a soup steeped in history. In fact, it was known as 'Baektang' or 'Byeongtang' in the 15th year of King Heonjong of Joseon (1849), as Hong Seok-mo wrote in Dongguk Sesigi.
But that's not all, it's also called Cheomsebyeong (添歲餠), and when asked about one's age, instead of a number, "How many bowls of byeongguk did you eat?" That's how important this dish is in Korean culture.
Eating a bowl of delicious tteokguk isn't just a meal, it's an event. A time to gather with family and friends to wish to each other for peace and success in the new year.
At Doyaji BBQ, we invite you to come and gather with your loved ones, try Tteokguk and have a great start for the new year.
