Some of the most valuable lessons don't happen behind the roaster—they happen at the origin.

Our second day in Takengon was spent understanding coffee beyond the farm. Together with our trusted sourcing partners, 2nd Mile Specialty and Ekstramil, we visited the warehouse where coffee begins its next journey after harvest.

Seeing the scale of operations, the attention to storage, and the care taken to preserve every lot reminded us that quality isn't built in a single step. It's protected throughout every stage of the supply chain.

One of the highlights of the day was cupping alongside the team—tasting and evaluating coffees selected for Ekstramil's commercial clients. Every cup represented countless decisions made long before the beans reach a roastery, and eventually, your cup.

As the day came to a close, we shared a meal with Anjar and the team. Over plates of asam jing, conversations shifted from coffee to culture, reminding us that relationships are just as important as the beans themselves.

Every great skill begins with a willingness to learn.

We're honoured to collaborate with Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) through the Rakan Muda Mahir Barista programme, introducing students to the world of specialty coffee while developing practical, industry-relevant skills.

Throughout the session, participants explored coffee fundamentals, espresso extraction, milk steaming, latte art, workflow, and customer service—experiencing what it's like behind a professional coffee bar.

At Portcoffee Roastery, we believe coffee education is more than brewing great coffee. It's about building confidence, discipline, communication, and professionalism that students can carry into any future career.
