I am currently focusing on teaching my 6 year olds the concept of partitioning numbers. The best way to work with this is to use our lovely Montessori math material, Golden Beads (GB).

Conservation of numbers is a very important part of a child's learning of mathematical concept. Teaching children to conserve is to show them that numbers do not change in their form even if their physical arrangement may look different.

Will children easily understand how to get 24? Do they know that when you partition the number it is 20 and 4? Well, i believe they will but we have been taught to memorize that concept instead of experiencing it.

Look at the quantities being represented by golden beads and the numerals with the use of Large Number Cards (LNC). This concrete representation makes the learning of number partitioning clearly visible to the minds eye. By allowing the use of the LNC these 3 girls have gotten a clearer idea of the relationship between the different hierachy of numbers.

Now i can zoom in to work on my thousands, hundreds, tens and units with ease. This is the beauty of the Montessori math materials.

School is back and you guessed it right... Dinosaurs is our theme of the month. We have had lots of activity focusing on this topic but what i have found most interesting is the children's creativity.

Our dinosaur, Mr T-Rex was given a piece of chicken by Isabelle and to top it off Mr T-Rex was given a crown to wear because he is, to her a powerful dinosaur.

Children have great imagination and in order for us to nurture this imagination, it has to come from something that they can relate to. That is why Montessori emphasize so much about culture in her curriculum because culture brings children into contact with reality and their Knowledge and Understanding of the World. This is evident in the other picture that i have posted here from a drawing by Hanny.

To see how she captures this in her imagination and is expresses through art goes to show that children have a desire to write and tell their story. Art, whether it is done through a paint brush or pen or pencil, is the very first expression a child goes through in their process of acquiring writing.

More often than not, i have seen how we are sometimes so bent on wanting to teach children to write too early, emphasize the writing of their ABC's or 123. Do we as parents or teachers get to have time to really let children explore the other side of the coin, by looking at letting children just draw, or scribble?

Do we need to always hold their hand to write? The answer is no. The only way to allow this freedom of expression is to allow your child to stop playing or using any mobile device and just play.

Play is a universal process children need to go through to build their large and fine motor skills. These in turn prepare the hand for writing and the mind for exploration.

Children are natural learners and the only way to do this is to be an observer and just watch and be receptive to what your children are learning. From there you will know they are taking baby steps to build their experiential learning. These are things they need to learn to prepare them for the 21st century.

One of the key aspect for teachers or parents to do is to always be observant to your surroundings. Our environment plays an important role in teaching us. So the best people to help you make that choice of topics are your own children. Listen to them. Observe their antics.

When planning any lessons, teachers and parents alike should use observation as the point of interest.

This will form your rationale as to why we are teaching. Dont teach for the sake of teaching. Teach with an interest in mind from your observation of the children.

You will find that learning becomes more meaningful for the children.

Of late, I have had many teachers coming to ask if there are any vacancy for a teaching position.
Meeting them up to get to know them has been interesting.

So, what do I look for in teachers? The role they play in educating children? The role they see themselves in as an educator.

We are now leaving in challenging times. This means everything is an instant at the press of a button or a tap on our phones. We do not have to go through lengthy process to get some things. Calling for our meals only may involve an app for grab food or food panda. However, do u think it is important to to just be comfortable with these daily comfort? Are our children learning that to get things we only need to push a button?

Where is the process now?Are our teachers going to be like this too? Only teaching for the sake of teaching to impart knowledge? Are we helping children too much? Teaching them shortcuts when answering questions?

Teachers at our school are chosen because they value process, the learning process. They value the development of a child giving them space and time to grow.

Activities presented or created are interesting. They can grow from a child's interest, from a teachers observation. Our talkabout build a child's interest, the materials provide concrete understanding of a topic. Worksheets are then created from this process.

Whether we are teaching Spelling, Phonics, Arithmetic, Maths, or other academic studies we must value process. Learning cannot be instantaneous because if we teach to memorise then it stays in their short term memory. If we teach with creativity, these memories stay with them forever in their long term memory. Building their storage of information. Ready for the next chapter of their lives, the Primary age.
