There was this one talk at the KL International Book Fair on 1 June 2023 which we felt very relevant. Will there still be bookstores in another 10 years? We are grappling with this question too as we ponder on whether to open our doors again to the public soon. As some of our followers had noticed, we had stopped accepting entry into our bookstore, and currently only utilising it as an online booksales storage centre. Many have asked us, when will we reopen? We ask ourselves whether the people who come will continue to read books or will we be merely a place for people to snap photos for the sake of yet another photo to share on their social media accounts. We started the bookstore not only for sales but to see that the local folks are able to get their reading materials and are able to meet other likeminded book lovers. Our 7-year report shows that the trend of deep-reading is lessening dramatically with the inability of GenZ to focus on something long enough. The effect of gadgets, fast reactive actions, are already here. Real reading needs time, lots of imagination as you plod along and suitable reading areas to enjoy the moment. Today reading for most people happens in a quick few seconds of looking up on the net or what passes through or pops up on their social media accounts. Real reading means slowing down and puts us in a calm situation, not a hurried one. Will we ever get this back, with the inventions of faster-than-yours coming up all the time now?

This brings us back to the talk yesterday - there was a man at the end of that session who said, bookstores will still be around forever. But as the speakers onstage lamented, the need to ‘keep up’ with the changing times are inevitable. Do you foresee the future? 😞

In 2000, in the pages of The New Yorker, Anthony Bourdain chronicled the chaos of a single Friday in the kitchen at Les Halles, in New York City—from an aspirin at 5:55 A.M., to a cold beer at 12:25 A.M. Revisit the essay, one of Bourdain’s earliest, right here: http://nyer.cm/dsP0dPK

We’ve been around for a little more than 7 years now. It’s been an interesting journey. Shall we keep on going? Our aim when we started was meant to initiate good reading habits amongst the community in our small town of Temerloh. Have we succeeded? This remains unanswered but we painstakingly have to accept that the culture in this town has grown to be a makan and social media culture (even more after the covid19 pandemic lockdowns were over). The problem is bigger than we expected but accept it we must and think of other ways to help our people before the effect of lack of reading habitually consumes the future generation. It is a fact we loathe but must accept. Will Temerloh embrace the effects of ‘materialism and technology’ that the world around is fostering tightly? Who knows.
