Art, History and 3D Printing

The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, last month debuted its Reboot Reality exhibit, which includes numerous installations with an interactive component. Visitors can don Occulus VR headsets to appreciate classical works of art in virtual reality -- a completely new museum experience.

There long has been a debate on what constitutes "art" -- and opinions have differed as to how music, film, radio and TV fit in. The debate in recent years has focused on video games, and there are compelling arguments both in support of and in opposition to the designation of video games as "art."

Still, whether VR is art may not be the most poignant issue. A more important question may be how VR and other emerging technologies should be used with traditional art. VR and 3D printing soon could change the way museums present art and other artifacts -- but would that be a good thing?

Merged VR: Augmented Reality Cubed

There is considerable development activity at the high end of hardware and content creation for virtual reality and augmented reality, as well as such AR aliases as mixed reality, extended reality and others.

Most industry investment is aimed at leading-edge gaming and industrial application development. However, the low-end of the market is also worth looking at, to see how people and institutions without big budgets -- consumers and education -- might adopt these technologies sooner, rather than waiting years for all the advancements to trickle down to lower price points.

An example of AR done on a more human-friendly scale is Merge VR. Its founders seem to have taken the hint from The Graduate ("One word: plastics"), added software and a bit of creativity, and then applied it to AR.

Facebook may still have the huge problem involving the scourge of fake news to deal with, but its gone and done something that will decrease your Facebook rage — just a smidge — by removing third-party app invites.
That's right, no longer will you roll your eyes and curse technology every time your aunt invites you to play Candy Cane Crush or Farmville 4: The Farmening or whatever terrible game is on Facebook or connected to Facebook.

The move was announced in a post to Facebook's Developers blog on Thursday afternoon. The app invites won't be supported with the newest Facebook software development kit and, while older versions will still support it, those invites will end February 2018.

There are three reasons why Apple's AirPods are considered the best true wireless earbuds you can buy: They're small, pair really easily to iOS devices, and only cost $159.

Everyone from Samsung to Jaybird to Bose have their own alternatives, but they cost even more. $159 for AirPods is a great price, but Crazy Baby, the company behind that crazy Mars levitating Bluetooth speaker, thinks it can offer even better sound for an even lower $99.

Plans for the world's first man-made "floating city" in the Pacific Ocean are beginning to take shape, with the non-profit organisation behind the project claiming a prototype could be ready by 2020.

The San Francisco-based Seasteading Institute has spent about a decade trying to work out how to build "permanent, innovative communities floating at sea".

Earlier this year, it signed an agreement with the government of French Polynesia to begin constructing the first of these self-sustaining nation states in 2019.

Now Joe Quirk, president of the Seasteading Institute, has outlined his plan to build a community consisting of about a dozen structures - including homes, hotels, offices and restaurants - by 2020.

Critics are in on Justice League, but Rotten Tomatoes won't be revealing its official score until Thursday, just after the stroke of midnight. Someone finally thought to use the Tomatometer to drive eyeballs to a live streaming event, and so here we are.

But we've seen enough reviews by now to call it: This film will wind up rotten.

Of the 39 reviews we found online by early Wednesday morning, 22 leaned rotten, while 17 leaned fresh (and many of those just barely). That makes our early, highly unofficial aggregated score 44% fresh – well shy of the 60% mark needed for that coveted red sticker.
Rotten Tomatoes is purposefully holding back its Tomatometer score nearly a full day after Warner Bros. lifted its review embargo, which was long ago set for 2:50 a.m. ET Wednesday. That's a first for the critical aggregator, which will instead reveal the number on its just-launched Facebook show See It/Skip It.

'Super Smash Bros.' tournament organizer sells his own house to keep things running. Not every business decision turns out to be a success, and sometimes that really, really, really sucks.

Michael "FullMetal" Buchheit, the organizer of the Super Smash Bros. tournament series Tipped Off, organized his twelfth Tipped Off set to go down in Georgia this weekend. But unlike previous years, not enough people signed up to cover the costs of hosting the tournament, Kotaku reported today.

In order to pay for everything, Buchheit had to sell his house.
Tipped Off has been running since 2006, back when the only serious competitive Smash game on the docket in most circles was Melee. Since then, the scene has blown up in extraordinary fashion, with about a dozen high-profile tournaments dotting the U.S. alone each year.

This means that less-frequent tournaments like Tipped Off — despite their storied histories in the competitive Smash scene — don't attract the same numbers that they used to.

Eminem's Revival is off to a great start.

Two days after the rapper dropped the first track from his new album, he showed up at the MTV EMAs to perform it in person.
And even though Beyoncé wasn't around to lend her vocals this time, Eminem had no trouble commanding the stage with his intense, introspective performance. (Skylar Grey, who co-wrote Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie," subbed in for Beyoncé's parts.)
Eminem's spent the past several weeks teasing the impending release of Revival – his first new album in four years – but as of now, we don't know exactly when it'll hit. If the rollout of "Walk on Water" is any indication, though, Eminem still knows exactly how to make a big splash.

Aldi is adding some high tech products to its range – with the latest additions being a 3D printer and a 4K TV.

The budget supermarket, known for its high quality, low cost groceries, and unpredictable middle aisle bargains, is getting some online exclusive bargains.

Soon Aldi shoppers will be able to pick up a 3D printer on the website – and it costs less than £300.

The printer prints layers of Fused Filament Fabrication to create physical objects that users can design themselves, or download design schematics from the internet.

Spectacles at a hipster pop-up store in London. They were supposed to change the snapping game forever, and maybe they did, but Snap's Spectacles caused a staggering $40 million loss on unsold devices to the company.
To try to get rid of some of those Spectacles — which, according to reports, are sitting in a warehouse in China by the hundreds of thousands — Snap has announced it will sell them in a pop-up shop in east London.

Boxpark Shoreditch, a hipster hotspot in the UK, will host a dedicated store for the Snap spectacles starting Saturday, 11 November, "just in time for Christmas and the winter sport season," a press release said.

The store will be an interactive space where people can try out the Spectacles, and hopefully buy them.

Snap said the $40 million loss was “primarily related to excess inventory reserves and inventory purchase commitment cancellation charges.”

Kim Kardashian West is a business, first and foremost. From her humble Keeping Up With The Kardashians roots – now in its tenth season on E! – she's has built a career featuring all the trappings of a lifestyle mogul success story.

There are Kim K. fragrances, Kim K. contour kits, Kim K. Kimojis. There's also her wildly successful mobile game (in which people can pretend to be famous) and her Kim Kardashian West official app (in which people can watch Kim be actually famous).
Now, she's got another mobile project in the works: She's – per a spokesperson – an "early adopter and advisor" on a new fashion app called ScreenShop. Users plug screenshot photos of friends or Instagram models or Kim, even, into the free app, and it'll breakdown the outfit by piece, suggesting similar items from participating clothing retailers.

Multiple apps have launched in recent years with quite similar concepts, including one from actress Kate Bosworth that's no longer available for download. The big difference here is, well, Kim.
