Ssalongo Batte Abubaker, coordinator of the Masaka-Bukakata Super Cooperative, has been working with Ndugu since 2021.

In that time, his cooperatives have accessed better markets, soil testing, certification, fertilisers, office equipment, laptops and dedicated field agents, all working together to make sure farmers get the harvests and incomes they deserve.

That's what four years of partnership looks like.

Organic farming practices are often sold as a win-win. Better for the environment. Better for the farmer.

But the data tells a more complicated story.

Farmers using organic inputs spend 23% more upfront capital to start their season than conventional farmers. Yet without guaranteed price premiums, that investment doesn't automatically translate into higher earnings per kilogram.
The lesson for the industry is clear:

Promoting organic practices without pairing them with fair premiums, access to affordable inputs, and income diversification support risks asking farmers to invest more while earning the same.
