Happy Valentine’s Day! We selected two photographers whose work reflects different forms of love.

Mous Lamrabat is a Moroccan-Belgian photographer and artist. Love is a recurring theme in his work, sometimes direct, sometimes subtle, but always present. In each series, Mous uses hearts and flowers in a symbolic way. Behind the scenes, he also works closely together with his partner

Valentine’s Day often focuses on romantic love. Mounir Raji, a Dutch-Moroccan photographer and artist, shows a wider perspective: love between partners, but also between family members who care for each other. In his series Yallah, he captures families riding together on scooters. In Dreamland, he photographs a young couple in an intimate conversation.

Fun fact: the portrait of Mous with hearts was taken by Mounir Raji. What about a bromance!

Rachid Bouhamidi was born in Palm Springs, California, in 1981. His father is Moroccan and his mother is French. He grew up surrounded by stories, traditions, and imagination.

His uncle opened the first Moroccan restaurant on the U.S. West Coast in San Francisco in the early 1960s. Later, in the 1970s, he opened Dar Maghreb on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. For almost forty years, Dar Maghreb was a cultural landmark that brought the atmosphere of Morocco to Los Angeles.

Bouhamidi spent much of his childhood at Dar Maghreb. For him, it felt like a world of its own. The restaurant was designed like a fifteenth-century Moroccan palace, not like a movie set. It had decorated walls, carved arches, and colorful tiles made by Moroccan craftsmen. Each room had its own style, inspired by cities and regions such as Rabat, Fez, and Berber culture. The space was filled with music, dancers, traditional clothing, and shared meals. These experiences strongly shaped his imagination.

A key figure in Bouhamidi’s work is the Moroccan bride. This figure comes from his childhood memories of weddings and celebrations at Dar Maghreb. About ten years ago, he painted a face in an abstract work and realized it looked like a bride from Fez. Since then, brides have appeared often in his art. They are richly decorated and have a strong, royal presence. They are never alone, but part of celebrations with music, dance, food, and shared joy.

Bouhamidi first visited Morocco just before he turned twenty. What had once felt like a dream became real. Since then, Moroccan influences have been present in his work, not as direct stories, but as poetic symbols connected to memory, family, and life in the diaspora.

While staying in Oukaimeden, visual artist and photographer Hiba Baddou got stuck at 3,000 meters high in a snowstorm for 48 hours. With nothing planned, she reached for her camera. “It was a crazy adventure and a crazy landscape.” The series came unexpectedly.
“I’m currently working on a project about water and this gave me a complete other view on how water can put us in crazy conditions, especially in a dry country.”
