Good morning everyone, I am sharing on behalf of the new store owners Rea and Ram! The Huia store is reopening tomorrow from 9 am - keeping the same hours, the same food menu, and the same staff! We are very excited for them and their new journey and wish them all of the best and the greatest Little store anyone could ask for. Please go down and support them on their new endeavour and make them feel at home in our beautiful Huia. They are long time Laingholm locals who made the trip over a few bays to live their dream running the Huia Store - As they start to get on their feet and get welcomed into our community their goal is to start introducing dinners, and blackboard menu items from their Home country Malaysia. As we are on our last two days as Alfreds we are finding ourselves reminiscing on our journey. When we first took over the store it was really sad, the amount of work that we had to put into it to get it back to food safety standards was breathtaking. The following photos are what the shop looked like days after it had been trading. I’m glad I took photos the day we got the key so I can look back and remind myself of how proud I am and how thankful I am of everyone who helped us create such a magical place. The Shop was in such a bad state of repair, we had to throw most things away, we had to get rid of the coffee machine because it was filled with cockroaches, fix the walls, rewire the entire building because of how unsafe it was, repaint, gib, plant, scrub, refloor, re do the entire septic system as it was leaking into Huia bay (and had been for a long time) - it was all worth it. Look at it now! It’s beautiful. The room that used to have a literal pi**ed on couch is now an amazing baking area, the kitchen is clean and the front of the Shop is amazing and full of personality and love. I am so proud. We are so proud. What we have accomplished is amazing. Alfred gave us the motivation needed save his place 🖤 it was all worth it

Our final day is this Sunday - we close at 2pm to the public.
The shop will then be closed for a week reopening on the 11th of November under new ownership.

🕷️ It’s the most wonderful time of the year 🎃

6 years and it’s time for the end - what can I say other then “I did it my way” we are officially in our last weeks as Alfred’s Huia store with Michelle and Josie - our last day is November the 2nd which will be more of a good bye then a trading day ❤️ in six years we have laughed and cried, met great people, made family, revived the great man Alfred himself and did him proud. It has been a real life changing experience, we are not the same people as the ones who started this journey and we will forever be grateful to everyone that came in and supported us. We got through unprecedented times, floods, a pandemic, a cost of living crisis, a years straight of rain, a marriage, some deaths, long hours, and countless other things. Alfreds has taught me so many life skills and has set me up for a very bright future. It has been a pleasure and an honour to have served the community for six years, working alongside my mum and family has been incredibly special and has been the best job I could have ever asked for. Thank you to all of our staff past present who helped us and grown with us, we truly could not have done this without you. And with that I leave you with Frank Sinatra - my way as it truly captures how we’re feeling right now. This is my grandfather’s favourite song and I know he is smiling on us right now. Over the coming weeks I will be sharing more photos and memories and I encourage you to do the same. We will be introducing you to the Shop keepers in the coming weeks ❤️
See you around Huia, it’s time for us to go back to what we used to do. Maintaining our farm, fixing fences, looking after the animals, and drinking beer 🍺

Happy 6th Birthday to us! Today marks 6 years since mum and I started this journey together. I hope Alfred is proud of us and everything we have done and accomplished. There is something very special about having his memory revived and the Hill family being spoken about again in the place they built. It’s been an incredibly moving journey and it has brought so many people close together, sharing memories of loved ones, and helping us create a shop that feels like home. Walking in the same space as those that have passed has changed us in ways we never expected. Happy Birthday Alfreds, and thank you to everyone who has been apart of our story. We appreciate and love you all ❤️
