Sadly it is time for Amanda, Violet and I to move on from the Lodge. We have purchased some land on the Island and we are going to build our dream home.
So maybe it's time for you or someone you know to enjoy this amazing location?
We have loved this property and we will be sad to leave it.
Thank you to everyone that has supported us while we have been the custodians of this special place 🙏

Who knew.................

Yes, the Earth is greener now than it was in the past:

Increased leaf area: The Earth's leaf area has increased by 5% over the last two decades, which is equivalent to the size of the Amazon rainforest.

Greening since the 1980s: The Earth has been greening since at least the 1980s.
Causes: The greening is attributed to:

Atmospheric carbon dioxide: The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from fossil fuel consumption has fertilized plants.

Tree planting programs: China and India have implemented ambitious tree planting programs.
Agricultural technology: China and India have scaled up their agricultural technology.
Photosynthesis: Higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the air allow plants to use less water and photosynthesize more easily.

The International Flag of Planet Earth
Why are we flying this flag at Great Barrier Lodge?

Initially I was motivated to fly the Palestinian flag to show solidarity with the innocent civilians of Palestine that are enduring unimaginable suffering as a result of the Israeli bombardment of their country.

But as I was about to run the Palestinian flag up the flag pole, it occurred to me that flying the flag of a particular country or territory is part of the reason that we have wars and often see ourselves as “different” from one another.

So, I researched to see if there was a flag that represented planet earth,
and I found this flag.

We fly this flag at Great Barrier Lodge because we do love a flag, but mostly because we want to initiate a discussion, and open people’s minds to the fact that we all live together on one planet, and that we should all work together to support and care for each other and our home, Planet Earth.

The designer:

Oskar is the designer behind the proposal The International Flag of Planet Earth, which was presented in 2015. Besides being a vexillologist (scholar of flags), he is a renowned Art Director in the advertising scene in Sweden, attested by many eminent awards to his name. Oskar firmly believes that symbols can create a powerful shift of perspective that can impact human behaviour. The flag itself is a symbol for Earth and an important reminder that we share this planet – with all of its challenges and possibilities.
Symbolic explanation
Centered in the flag, seven rings form a flower – a symbol of the life on Earth. The rings are linked to each other, which represents how everything on our planet, directly or indirectly, are linked. The blue field represents water which is essential for life – also as the oceans cover most of our planet's surface. The flower's outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the universe.
Heraldic blazon
Centered on an azure field, seven circles of silver interlaced, creating a flower.
