Cyclone Vaianu is tracking south across the North Island this Sunday 12 April and our area is expected to be affected.
Heavy Rain Warning (Orange)
From 9pm Saturday through to 2pm Sunday โ expect 70โ100mm of rain with heavy bursts of up to 20mm per hour. Streams and rivers can rise fast. Watch for surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions.
Strong Wind Warning (Orange)
From 10pm Saturday through to 6pm Sunday โ severe gale-force easterlies swinging to southwesterlies during Sunday afternoon, with gusts up to 130km/h in exposed places. Real risk of trees down, power outages and damage to structures. Take extra care if driving, especially in high-sided vehicles.
There is a moderate chance both warnings could be upgraded to Red as the cyclone gets closer and its track becomes clearer, so keep checking for updates.
Note: Great Barrier Island has already been upgraded to a Red Warning for wind โ a serious, potentially life-threatening situation for that area.
Please take this seriously and prepare now. Secure loose items outside, have a torch and supplies ready, avoid unnecessary travel on Sunday, and check on neighbours who may be isolated or need assistance.
