Today while in town grabbing a few things, I came across these handmade bushcraft axes and tools at Mighty Meats 2018 in Invercargill, all created by a young local lad named David. 🪓🌿

David loves the outdoors, crafting, bushcraft, scavenging and creating things with his hands. From axes to flax work and other handmade creations, this is something he genuinely enjoys doing and it gives him purpose, creativity and a way to earn a little bit of pocket money while doing what he loves.

I ended up buying this wee axe myself because honestly, I just thought it was pretty cool and useful as winter sets in, but more than that, I wanted to support a young person putting themselves out there and creating something with their own hands in a world where that’s becoming rarer and rarer.

The lovely staff at Mighty Meats said they ring him every time something sells, and you could just see how much it means. 🥹

So if you’re in town and happen to pop into Mighty Meats, maybe take a wee look at his creations sitting on the counter. Sometimes supporting local isn’t always about big businesses, sometimes it’s about encouraging someone quietly finding their place in the world through creativity, craftsmanship and passion.

Keep creating, David. The world needs more people making things with their hands and heart 🤍

We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Christian Hull for spending time with us here in Motupōhue/Bluff this weekend, sharing kai, kōrero and experiencing the kaupapa behind what we do both inside and outside of the wharekai/restaurant. After hearing about our fortnightly kaumātua lunches and community mahi, Christian quietly chose to make a donation towards helping us continue this kaupapa 🥹, something we genuinely appreciated and never expected.
