Coffee is our passion, making it sustainable is our focus. http://www.primaroastery.co.nz/ Caffe Prima started out in small city garage in 1995 with its first home blends, Blue Mountain and Diva. Since then, we have moved premises to a warehouse roastery in the industrial area of Woolston, where our small team of coffee fanatics have used their extensive experience to craft a comprehensive range of blends and assemble a line-up of stylish coffee paraphernalia.

A new single origin has landed at Prima Roastery!

We’d like to introduce you to the Azalea Honey from Sumatra, Indonesia. Ideal for filter coffee or pour overs. This brew has tasting notes of dates, raisin and toffee, along with herbal and floral notes.

This single origin is part of the Bloom Coffee Project.

Bloom Coffee Project is a collaboration of producers whose goal is to change the perception of Indonesian coffees amongst coffee consumers.

By applying a variety of experimental processing methods to their highest quality beans, the producers introduced a wide range of very unique flavour compositions to the coffee market.

Some of Bloom’s micro lots were acknowledged during recent national Cup of Excellence competition.

This single origin is available online or in cafe!

Great coffee is about more than just taste.

By supporting local cafés that use coffee, you’re helping keep small businesses thriving while also backing farmers to be paid more fairly for their work.

It’s a simple choice that has a big impact, locally and globally.

This term, the Hōhepa barista training students, after 10 weeks of learning all aspects of being a barista, came together as a team to run the Prima café for a special Saturday opening. It was a chance to show off their skills to friends and family, and to celebrate everything they’ve achieved.

From serving fresh scones to making coffees, each student gave it their all, creating an awesome, lively vibe in the café.

We’re so proud of the team. It’s been amazing to see their skills grow and their confidence build, not just over the course, but throughout the morning itself.
A huge thank you to the Hōhepa team, Jess, and Natalie for helping organise such an incredible course and a truly special day.

The Hohepa team have been spending the last few sessions learning all about steaming milk!

They’ve been getting familiar with how the steam wand works and the proper way to care for it, building confidence step by step. To start, the group practised milk texturing using water and dish soap, a great trick that creates a texture almost identical to real milk without any waste (although definitely not as tasty!). With a thermometer in the jug, they were able to learn exactly what temperature to aim for.

Everyone gave it a go, getting a feel for the pressure of the steam wand and learning how to create that perfect whirlpool.

Once they had the hang of it, it was time to move on to real milk! The group made their own coffees and hot chocolates (with plenty of marshmallows, of course). There were lots of smiles as everyone proudly poured their drinks, with some impressive latte art too, including a few love hearts and an awesome fern from Anna.

In the coming weeks, the course will move into the café, where the team will learn how to use the till and get a feel for the flow of service. Exciting times ahead!

Food from Prima Café is now available on !

Foodprint’s mission is to reduce food waste, something that closely aligns with our commitment to sustainability and lowering our environmental impact.

In New Zealand alone, cafés, restaurants and supermarkets generate around 50,000 tonnes of food waste every year. That’s where Foodprint steps in.
Foodprint is an app that lets you purchase food at a discounted price, helping businesses reduce waste while you enjoy delicious food at a great price!

It’s simple:
Download the Foodprint app, scroll to find Prima Café, order and pay through the app, then pick up your food when it’s ready.

Over the past few sessions the Hōhepa team have been diving into the world of coffee making. Starting with learning about the grinders and how changing the grind size affects extraction. Natalie delivered an awesome visual presentation, comparing water running through rocks versus sand to demonstrate the difference between course and fine coffee grinds. It was a great way to show how grind size impacts the final result in the cup.

After understanding how the grinder works, the team spent time practicing their tamping skills and then they were ready to start pouring shots! With some trial and error, and plenty of coffee smelling, they worked together to adjust the grind and achieve shots running within the correct range.

To wrap up the session, everyone chatted about what they'd learnt and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolates (with lots of marshmallows), made by Natalie.

In the upcoming weeks the group will be learning how to steam milk before bringing all their skills together to make coffee from start to finish!

The United Nations has declared 2026 the Year of the Woman Farmer, shining a light on the vital role women play in global agriculture, and the inequalities they continue to face.

Women are central to food production and supply chains, yet they often have less access to land ownership, income, training, and leadership opportunities.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate some of the incredible women working in coffee on Fairtrade farms.

Fairtrade supports fairer, more inclusive farming systems. Women make up around 40% of the world’s agricultural workforce, yet equality in pay, land rights, and leadership is still out of reach for many. Fairtrade helps farmers in developing countries build financial security and gain a stronger voice at the negotiating table.

This International Women’s Day is a moment to recognise the women behind the products we enjoy every day, and the importance of building a more equitable future for agriculture!

Untouched World Kitchen is a Christchurch favourite. Located just five minutes from Christchurch Airport, they celebrate healthy, seasonal, and free-range local produce.

The café is bright and welcoming, featuring a beautiful outdoor garden area where a creek runs through and the sun pours in. Serving fresh Prima Coffee, they offer an impressive cabinet filled with sweet treats and freshly baked scones alongside a menu packed with hearty, nourishing dishes made from local, free-range ingredients.

UW Kitchen places a strong focus on sustainability across both their retail store and kitchen. They partner with B1G1, an initiative that allows businesses to give back while operating as usual. Every coffee purchased provides one day of access to clean drinking water for people living in poverty. Since 2018, they’ve contributed an incredible 209,802 days of clean drinking water.

Beyond this initiative, the team is highly educated in recycling practices, while their chef prioritises local and seasonal sourcing. Food waste is considered from the menu design stage, ensuring ingredients are used thoughtfully and waste is minimised wherever possible.

Untouched World Kitchen is a must-visit spot! Stop by for a coffee, enjoy the garden setting, and have a browse through their retail store.

Prima has partnered with Hōhepa Canterbury to deliver an 11-week barista training course for their community.

Hōhepa is a vibrant community supporting people with intellectual disabilities, creating opportunities for individuals to live fully engaged and meaningful lives. Through diverse living options, learning and activity programmes, community participation, and therapeutic support, Hōhepa nurtures the development of body, soul, and spirit.

The first session, led by our barista trainer Natalie, focused on introductions and discovering what everyone hoped to gain from the course, with many participants excited to learn how to steam milk so they can make their favourite hot drinks!

After getting to know one another, the group explored espresso machines and grinders, learning about each component through a fun labelling quiz.

There’s plenty of excitement building as the group looks forward to getting hands-on with the equipment and developing their barista skills in the sessions ahead.
