Alto Café

Today we visited Alto Café at 32 Mailer Street, Mornington. The café is situated in the middle of the Mornington shopping area between the Mornington Health Centre and Countdown Mornington.

When you walk into the café you will see a beautifully setup cabinet with a good selection of in-house made food, from club sandwiches, giant sausage rolls, cheese rolls to all sorts of sweet treats.

The café is quite large with a good amount of seating in two areas, there is a big glass set of windows so you can sit and watch the world rushing by while you sip your cup of tea or latte.

This café has a brunch menu and dinner menu with comprehensive array of dishes, so I suggest you look at their website for more information.

Today Steph and I ordered a sausage roll ($10.00) club sandwich ($5.50) bowl of fries ($8.00) and a ginger slice ($6.50), along with our order I had a flat white coffee ($4.80), and Steph had a milkshake ($6.00)

The sausage roll had a beautiful taste, this was not the average sausage roll, it was massive and worth every cent. I personally would recommend this roll as one of the best I have tasted in a long time.

The club sandwich was filled with ham, tomato, relish, mayonnaise and other salads. Steph said it was gorgeously put together.
The bowl of fries was presented in a good size dish along with two sauces, one being tomato and the other being an aioli and cheese dipping sauce, the chips where crispy and light and aioli and cheese sauce was very delicious and very morish.

The ginger slice was substantial in taste which is good as no one wants a weak tasting ginger slice, the slice had crystallized ginger on top and was very easy to eat.

Stephs milkshake was full of flavor but could have done with a bit of ice cream to make it a little thicker in texture,
My coffee was made to very high standard and pleasing to the palate.

We highly recommend “Alto Café” give it try and discover another great taste of Dunedin.

Stay safe and have a great Christmas

Café Aroma.

We had time on our hands while we waited for new tyres on our car, we decided to walk along King Edward Street and find a café.

We came across this little café called “Café Aroma” with a full food cabinet which is rare at 3pm as most cafés are winding down or closing at this time.

As you walk in you have seating for about fifteen to twenty people, the cabinet is full of beautiful fresh-looking foods, from club sandwiches to sweet delights.

We were greeted with a smile and asked what we would like, I ordered my usual order of flat white coffee and Steph ordered a cold drink from the fridge. For a quick snack I ordered a filled bagel which was offered either warmed or served chilled, I chose chilled, it tasted delightful, and it was light to eat, some bagels can be tough if served cold. Steph ordered a chicken filled wrap served chilled, she said it was filled nicely with chicken and salad and easy to eat.

The café was reasonably priced and we will be happy to go again.
The tables were comfortably set out with a long-cushioned bench seat along the wall and chairs at every table. You could say a bit cosy but were happy with only a few people in the café.

I would recommend trying out this café, I think you will find it a little treasure.

Stay safe and remember “Food is good”

Artisan Pantry and Café

Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and warm on this wet Dunedin day.

Today we visited Artisan Pantry and Café at 616 Kaikorai Valley
Road, this is located at the Burnside end of Kaikorai Valley.

This almost hidden café on the left-hand side of Kaikorai Vally Road driving toward Couplands Bakery is a little gem. There is parking on the roadside and a small car park just inside the driveway. Outside there is a nice sitting area with picnic tables so you can enjoy your lunch on a sunny Dunedin day.

When you walk in through glass doors you are greeted with a couple of shelves of sauces, pickles and relishes including pasta and frozen meals.

To the right-hand side of the shop is the café with a cabinet full of delights from filled scones, sandwiches, cheese rolls, peppermint slices, lemon tarts, lolly cake and other slices, this also includes gluten free options. The options for refreshments include coffee, tea, and cold drinks.

I ordered three cheese rolls and a flat white coffee. The cheese rolls were nice and filled the empty space but could have done with onion powder to enhance the flavour. The coffee was perfect and was delivered to the table. Steph ordered a filled scone with fried egg, salami, spinach, and homemade t tomato sauce and mayonnaise, Steph also ordered a cinnamon scroll which lived up to its name, so full of flavour and yummy. Steph had a bottled orange and mango juice.

The staff member was polite and engaging, she welcomed you in and also thanked you as you left. This was lovely manners and good hospitality.

Th price of each item was good with a below average for cost, such as the cheese rolls which were only $2 each, instead of $6 to $8 at other cafes, the filled scone was only $8, the slices were on average $4.50. this price range is excellent in the café world as the average for slices is $7 to $8 each at other cafes.

We will be back to enjoy their delights and beautiful beverages

Stay safe and keep warm, summer is not far away.

Cheers from Dunedin Foodie, Chris D
