Being a part of the Geraldine Ukulele Festival is an unforgettable experience!

Lorenzo was a wonderful performer whose charm and humour transported us all the way to Italy.

And thank you to old friends and new for joining us over two nights of Verde Italia.

This isn’t a pretty post.

Every choice made in our kitchen is a chance to do things a little better.

There have been some quiet changes happening at Verde, and it felt like time to share what progress looks like. Single use cups are gone, replaced by Be Chunky loan cups you can borrow and return. Our glass jars get a second life too. Got clean jars at home you don’t need? Bring them in and swap them for a coffee on us.

Behind the scenes, our coffee arrives in reusable tins rather than unrecyclable bags. It costs more in freight, but it’s the right call. Anchor supplies our dairy because they collect and recycle their containers right here in New Zealand. Our Karma products are organic, fair trade, made in New Zealand, and packaged only in glass and cans. These suppliers aren’t the cheapest option, but they line up with how Verde wants to do things.

In the kitchen, cling film has been steadily replaced with reusable wraps and silicone covers. Plastic boards have made way for wooden ones, and stainless steel bowls go wherever plastic used to. Less plastic in the kitchen means less chance of microplastics ending up in your food.

Locally grown South Canterbury produce goes into as much of the menu as possible, and those relationships with our producers keep growing. Food scraps go to local chickens and coffee grounds head to a local gardener. Soft plastics get collected and driven to Christchurch for recycling, and even plastic lids are remade into farm products. Paper dockets, receipts are seperated and wrapped up in paper to be recycled. Sugar in jars not individual packets. It all adds up.

Envirowaste NZ has come in to audit our waste and help build a proper strategy, including training for the whole team.

None of this is perfect and there’s plenty more to figure out. But every small shift helps, and it’s worth spending more to do it right.

On Thursday we closed a bit earlier and we all went out for some indoor bowls at the Geraldine Bowling Club, followed by drinks and a Verde-themed quiz at Bonnie Day Brewery and Taproom and then a delicious meal at Royal India Restaurant Geraldine. It was great to do something (other than work) as a team and to be hosted by some local organisations and businesses. We’re so lucky to have places like this in our little town and we’d like to encourage you all to get out there and support them this Winter!
