Greymouth RSA

Greymouth RSA The NZ RSA was formed in 1916 by returning Anzacs during World War One to provide support and comfort for service men and women and their families.

Our main mission is to remember and care for all those impacted by service for New Zealand. About the RSA
The Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association is a service organization. It is one of the largest voluntary welfare organisations in New Zealand and one of the longest established ex-service organisations in the world. Today over 120,000 members throughout New Zealand share a common

commitment to the Crown, the Nation and the Community; dedicated to the RSA motto – ‘People Helping People’. RSA commitment to welfare is embodied in Poppy Day when red poppies are exchanged for donations to hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders to raise funds for veterans’ welfare and to honour the memory of those who have given their lives in times of war. Poppy Day is usually observed on the Friday before Anzac Day. Anzac Day is observed each year on the 25th April. RSAs throughout New Zealand take part in wreath-laying ceremonies of remembrance for fallen comrades.

Today in history Victory in Europe (VE Day) - 9th May 1945

After more than 2,000 days of conflict and hardship, the war in Europe ended with Germany’s unconditional surrender at Reims. It felt like the finish line - the moment soldiers could finally come home. But the war wasn’t over just yet. Fighting continued in the Far East and Pacific for several more months, until Japan’s surrender brought World War II to its true close.

It is hard to imagine how relieved the nation must have been when it heard of the surrender of Germany and the news that the Kiwi troops were now out of harm’s way.

Not surprisingly the news of VE Day was wildly celebrated throughout New Zealand with street parades, dances, bonfires and formal celebrations. However, the joy was tempered by the fact that the war still was not over since Imperial Japan remained undefeated.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s troops were in Trieste, Italy, and found themselves facing off against Yugoslavian communist forces that were determined to claim the city and its surrounds. The situation was eventually resolved, but for a time it threatened to boil over and was one of the very first stand-offs of the Cold War.

A day of celebration…..and a reminder that history rarely ends in a single moment.

STORY📰 When Westport’s Private Zack Armstrong was asked his reason for recently joining our ranks as an infantry soldier in the Reserve Force, the registered paramedic answered without hesitation, “to give back to my community.”

In January, he spent three weeks on Reserve Force Infantry Corps training to become an infantry soldier, training on a variety of weapons systems, soldiering skills, casualty care and field radio communications.

“It doesn’t matter what civilian area you come from, you’re forced to grow and improve, and you’ll gain skills you can use elsewhere. If you think you want to join the Reserve Force, showing up with a good mind set and strong work ethic, you’ll pass and get a lot out of it.” ~ Private Zack Armstrong
