Thanks Robbo from Bluff RSA and all the Local Legends who made my day helping me laying my first Wreath on the Memorial remembering the Sikhs in British Indian Army with ANZAC Troops.
Here’s a Brief History about the My Sikh People tha I would like to share with my TJ’s Whanau.
Lest We Forget 🌺
During the Gallipoli Campaign, Sikh soldiers of the 14th Sikhs Regiment stood shoulder to shoulder with ANZAC troops—fighting under the same command and enduring the same brutal conditions.
At battles like Sari Bair, they advanced under heavy fire, outnumbered and exposed—yet held their ground with extraordinary courage. Many gave their lives in a single day, helping support the wider ANZAC mission.
Though not part of the ANZAC corps, their sacrifice is deeply woven into the story we remember on ANZAC Day.
Key Details of Sikh Participation at Gallipoli:
14th Sikhs' Sacrifice: On June 4, 1915, during the attack on Gully Ravine, the 14th Sikhs lost 379 men in a single day, and overall casualties left the regiment nearly wiped out.
Key Units: The 14th Sikhs were part of the 29th Indian Infantry Brigade.
Key Roles: The 21st Kohat and 26th Jacob's Mountain Batteries landed on April 25, 1915, alongside the 1st Australian Division.
Logistics & Support: The Indian Mule Corps was crucial for transporting supplies for the Allies throughout the campaign.
Other Duties: Punjabi soldiers and Sikh, including those from the 14th Sikhs, helped with the war effort.
Legacy and Recognition:
Puggaree Adoption: Sikh soldiers left a lasting impression on the Australian army, with their traditional turban cloth (puggaree) being adapted for the Australian slouch hat.👳🏼♀️
Today, I attended the ANZAC parade in Bluff and felt truly overwhelmed by the support and warmth from our local legends. It meant a lot to stand together in remembrance.
Today, we honour not just the ANZACs—but also the Sikh soldiers who fought beside them with bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice.
Lest We Forget.
We remember their courage, sacrifice and unity that binds us still
