📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - WINTER, BUT MAKE IT COLOURFUL 📷

Winter doesn’t have to mean flat, grey wedding photos.

This shot of Karisma and James at Abel Estate in July has the couple right in the middle of cocktail hour, glasses in hand, with the camellias flowering behind them. The pinks in the hedge give the image a proper lift without making it look staged or overworked.

That’s what makes the photo work. It’s relaxed, social and full of small details. The couple are having a quick moment together, guests are moving around them, and the garden is quietly adding colour in the background.

It also shows why the grounds matter in winter. You still get structure, greenery and seasonal colour, even when the day isn’t relying on summer light or big floral borders.

As Karisma said, Abel Estate had “beautiful greenery, elegant décor, and picturesque lake.”

This frame catches the greenery doing exactly what it should during cocktail hour.

🌿 BIGGER VASES, CLEANER LINES 🌿

Small bud vases are a lovely way to spread flowers through a table. But larger vases give the room a different kind of lift.

For Petissa and Tui’s wedding in the Winery Room, these taller white arrangements helped draw the eye down each table without making the set-up feel crowded. Simple white florals, soft fabric, timber tables and the high ceiling all work together here. It’s clean, open and still has enough detail to feel finished.

It’s also a good reminder that flowers at Abel Estate don’t have to follow one fixed formula. You can go low and delicate, tall and structured, or somewhere in between.

Different table layout. Different floral treatment. Different feel.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - ALMOST A SILHOUETTE 📷

Black and white does a lot of heavy lifting here.

This shot of Teddy and Tristan at Abel Estate in July 2022 is taken along the dam beside the lake as night falls, and the lack of colour is exactly what makes it work. The couple become shapes first. The wide sky, the dark treeline and the bride’s train all pull the image into something quieter and more cinematic.

It’s not a big, bright portrait. It’s almost a silhouette, with Tristan holding Teddy’s train as they move across the frame. That small practical gesture gives the photo its feeling. Simple, useful, and oddly lovely.

The space matters too. The dam gives the photographer a clean line to work with, while the lake area adds scale without cluttering the shot. It’s a reminder that some of the strongest wedding images happen in the in-between moments, walking from one place to the next.

As Teddy said, they chose the venue because they could have “the ceremony, photos and reception all in one spot.”

This is exactly the kind of photo that makes that matter.

🎉 EVENTS FOR YOU! 🎉

Yes, Abel Estate does weddings. But that’s not the whole story.

We also host parties, team-building days, Christmas events, fundraisers, corporate celebrations and private functions, with exclusive use of the venue across the whole 2.5ha property.

That gives you space to do the event properly, whether it’s a long lunch, a cocktail-style evening, a seated dinner, or a team day that doesn’t feel like everyone’s been trapped in a beige meeting room.

You get the lake, the vines, the indoor and outdoor spaces, flexible catering options and proper event coordination from enquiry through to event day.

So if you’re planning something that needs more atmosphere than a function room, Abel Estate is worth a look.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - FIRST LOOK, FULL SMILES 📷

Some first look photos are quiet. This one isn’t.

Shally and Mark are standing in front of the Abel Estate rotunda on a mid-winter wedding day, and the whole image is built around that instant reaction. No stiff posing. No overcooked drama. Just two people properly happy to see each other.

The rotunda gives the frame structure without taking over, and the winter light does its job well. Everything is bright, clean and crisp, which makes the smiles stand out even more. It feels personal, but still very much tied to the setting.

That’s what makes a first look useful too. It gives the couple a moment together before the ceremony, settles the nerves, and creates photos that don’t have to compete with the schedule.

☎️ GIFTS, WISHES AND VOICE MESSAGES ☎️

A guest table doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be useful, easy to find, and good enough to look like part of the room.

This set-up on the Winery Room dance floor brings a few wedding extras together in one place: the wishing well for cards and gifts, the audio guest book, and a few simple styling details to finish it off.

The best part is that these are included in our styling packages, so you don’t have to source every little detail yourself.

The audio guest book is the fun bit. Guests pick up the old-style phone and leave a voice message for the couple. It can sit alongside a written guest book, or replace it if you want something with a bit more personality.

Written messages are lovely, but hearing people’s actual voices, the laughs, the pauses, the slightly emotional bits, gives you a different kind of keepsake.

Also, one day you’ll probably have to explain to someone under 10 what that phone was.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - LIFTED INTO THE MOMENT 📷

Some dancefloor shots are all about the move.

This one from Rochelle and Jason’s Abel Estate wedding in June last year has the lift, the laugh, the guests reacting, and then the dress doing half the work. The fabric catches the light and turns the whole frame into something much bigger than a quick dancefloor moment.

It’s dramatic, but not overdone. You can still see the room, the guests, the DJ, the applause and the couple clearly enjoying themselves. Nothing feels too polished. It feels like someone caught the exact second the reception properly kicked up a gear.

That’s what a good reception space needs to allow for. Dinner, speeches and views over the lake are one part of the evening. Then the room has to shift into music, movement and a bit of chaos without feeling cramped.

This shot has all of that.

🎀 HIGH TEA FOR A GREAT CAUSE 🎀

A fun afternoon out is even better when it’s backing something worthwhile.

Join us at Abel Estate on Sunday, Sep 13, from 1.30pm for our annual champagne high tea supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation. Tickets are $139pp, with at least $60 per person going directly to the charity.

You’ll get a delicious high tea, a complimentary glass of V***e Clicquot Champagne, red carpet photography, live music, and a guest speaker. There’ll also be a silent auction with some excellent prizes to help raise even more for the Foundation.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - CLOSE ENOUGH TO FEEL IT 📷

Not every lake photo needs the whole lake in it.

This shot of Lauren and Alex at Abel Estate in July 2023 works because it goes the other way. High angle, close in, with just enough of the jetty and water around them to make the setting clear without turning the couple into tiny figures in a landscape.

It feels private, which is the strength of the image. Their faces are close, the background falls away, and the lake becomes texture rather than scenery. You still know exactly where they are, but the moment stays with them.

That’s the value of having proper photo spots on-site. You can use the same feature, like the lake, in completely different ways. Wide and dramatic when you want scale. Close and quiet when the moment calls for it.

As Alex said, “The venue and grounds are beautiful.”

This frame proves you don’t need much more than that when the angle is right.

🍽️ ROUND TABLES, DIFFERENT ENERGY 🍽️

Rectangular tables have one kind of look. Round tables bring something different.

This Abel Estate set-up shows why. The Winery Room still feels open, balanced and easy to move through, but the room has a softer layout with more individual table styling. Each table gets its own little moment without the space feeling chopped up. The high ceilings, big windows and natural light help keep everything feeling bright and connected.

It’s a good option if you want a reception layout that feels a bit more relaxed, while still looking polished.

Round tables don’t have to feel old-fashioned. Done well, they’re clean, practical and surprisingly sharp.
