Furneaux Lodge

Furneaux Lodge Looking out over the calm, clear waters of Endeavour Inlet, Furneaux Lodge is the first stop on the renowned Queen Charlotte Track.

Built in the early 1900's at the foot of it's namesake Mount Furneaux, and surrounded by 2000 acres of New Zealand native forest, Furneaux Lodge is set on 3 acres of the flattest and most picturesque scenery in the Marlborough Sounds which has been unchanged since Captain Cook's first visit to the inlet in 1769.

And that's a wrap on another season at Furneaux Lodge!!

As we close for the winter months, we will undertake our usual repairs and maintenance projects, along with a very exciting refurbishment project to give Howden House a fresh new look!

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible team, whose hard work and warmth make this place so special, and to all of our wonderful guests who have shared in the magic of Furneaux Lodge with us. Your stories, laughter, and support mean everything.

With plans to reopen in November, we hope our team enjoys a well-deserved break, and we look forward to welcoming you back for another epic season.

Today, we pause to remember.

As the sun rises over the Marlborough Sounds, we reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of those who served and those who never returned.

At Furneaux Lodge, we are surrounded by peace and beauty, a quiet reminder of what was fought for, and what we must never take for granted.

Lest we forget.

‘One of the best places I have stayed at. What a special location. So good after a hard day of walking. Customer service of the receptionist and restaurant staff were amazing.’

Thank you Natalie for your kind words 🤍

There’s nothing better than arriving at Furneaux after a big day on the Queen Charlotte Track and being able to relax, refuel and unwind in the Sounds.
To our reception and restaurant team… this is all you.

We’re so lucky to share this special corner of Marlborough with you all.

🌊 Seaweek Spotlight: Short-tail Ray / Whai 🐟

Gliding quietly along the sandy seabed of the Marlborough Sounds, short-tail rays are gentle giants often spotted in the shallows around Furneaux Lodge.

Did you know?
🌊 Short-tail rays are the largest ray species in New Zealand, growing up to 2 metres long.
🌊 Despite their size, they feed mainly on shellfish and crustaceans hidden beneath the sand.
🌊 Their flat bodies help them camouflage perfectly against the ocean floor.

On calm days, you might see one resting near the jetty or slowly cruising past, a quiet reminder of the rich marine life beneath the surface.

This Seaweek, we’re celebrating the incredible species that call the Marlborough Sounds home and the importance of protecting these special waters for generations to come.

Slow down. Look closer. Respect the ocean. 💙
