Tuatua cafe

Tuatua cafe 2022 WasteMinz Award winning cafe. A pleasant sunny sanctuary to escape throwaway culture

Tuatua is a small cafe/deli/takeaway operating out of one of the iconic boat sheds down on Frank Kitts park, with the most beautiful view in the whole of Wellington straight out to sea. Coffee, counter snacks, nachos and our famous burgers - including our venison burger with tamarillo chutney - are prepared on the premises by a small and friendly team, Simon, Harri, Meg and Tanya. On sunny days yo

u can sit outside the cafe at our tables watching people skate by. We use celsius coffee and at the end of the day take the coffee grounds home with any other food scraps to turn into compost we use to grow more vegetables. Ingredients are brought in to Tuatua as often as possible in the bike trailer attached to the bike Simon cycles in on. We use locally produced ingredients and free range eggs and bacon, and sell organic drinks - no pepsi or coca cola (bad karma!).

So good to see so many people down on the waterfront yesterday to witness complete his world record breaking swim a super human feat and bringing this extremely important issue (that NZ is pretty well the only country that still allows bottom trawling in its waters) to the attention of a good chunk of the population, also bringing a lot of people and good vibes to the Wellington waterfront single-handedly contributing more to the local waterfront economy then any cruise ship has done with a zillion times more positivity. Be sure to sign the petition.

So shameful our govt has decided not to recognise Palestine.
Despite the yuk Welly weather, so pleasing to see thousands of good people marching in solidarity with Palestine.

After running a café on the waterfront for 17 years, Simon Edmonds knows a thing or two about hospitality. His current venture is one that still allows people to have delicious hot beverages – but with zero waste.

It was Kyra’s last day today ): We have been sooo lucky having Kyra on our small team for so long Kyra started working for us while studying full time doing her fine arts degree, and still managing 4 shifts at the cafe unfazed forever since . We have also felt very privileged that Kyra continued on at the cafe since graduating last year .
Thanks Kyra for your great playlists, blackboard mug & pigeon drawings, amazing coffees, reminders about taking stuff out of the oven and opening those jars that no one else could open.

We are putting our prices up !
It’s always a bit tricky getting our prices to balance between providing value but also keeping up with rising costs.
We reckon our prices still are great value.
And also considering we pay the living wage, use only reusables for our coffee, drinks, mylks and milks, our food waste is composted, and we use locally sourced supplies, we reckon that adds extra value though unnecessary resource use.

We are also aware that times are tough and some peeps are cutting back on spending . So we are also happy for folks to pay what they can no questions asked .

We like our weekly visits by who pick up our food waste. We like it that it is all picked up by bike and trailer (rather then a big stinky truck) .
The food waste is then taken to their urban regenerative farm to be composted and regenerated into rich soil to grow produce including this beautiful salad which I pick up weekly on my bicycle and trailer. Isn’t that a great circular bicycular partnership! Having food waste composted in this way rather then letting it go to landfill is one of the most effective ways that a business like our own can lower its impact on the environment.
Kaicycle have recently taken over a larger space in lyall bay, so are now scaling things up having the capacity to take on more businesses.
So if your office space or business doesn’t yet have a food waste solution get in touch with them. ♻️
