Our Story

SourBros Bakery is a sourdough bread project delivering authentic artisan loaves to the Whanganui area. Operating a stones-throw from Whanganui’s main street, we are selling wholesale to the cafes, restaurants and delis of Whanganui township while also operating a weekly stall at the Riverside Market.

Whanganui had no artisan bread bakeries, and cafes and restaurants were forced to make their bread to meet their own high standards. After speaking with several chefs and owners of local establishments, we were confident that most would much rather buy bread from a reputable local bakery than make it themselves. There was also a similar gap in the retail market. Customers looking for artisan loaves were left with the choice of baking it themselves or going without.

We have stepped up to fill this gap in the market. With 4 years of artisan baking experience in Wellington, John Wilson became a confident, adaptable baker and manager before his relocation to Whanganui. His business partner, Matt Ellingham - also a recent relocatee (back) to Whanganui, is a keen and competent home baker with the same passion for creating healthy, delicious sourdough. Matt also has the skills and resources required to start and run a successful business, with a varied career history which has taken him around the world, and an enthusiasm for entrepreneurship.
