40 Years of Peace | The Mount Data SIPAT
On September 13, we commemorate a historic milestone that took place right here at Mount Data Hotel.
Forty years ago, the Mount Data Peace Accord, formally known as the Joint Memorandum of Agreement for the Cessation of Hostilities, was signed between the Government of the Philippines and the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CPLA).
The peace pact was sealed through the Kalinga tradition of SIPAT, with the exchange of allasiw, or peace tokens. Then-President Corazon Aquino offered a Bible, r***e, and rosary, while CPLA leader Fr. Conrado Balweg presented a spear, shield, bolo, and head ax.
This historic event became an important milestone in the pursuit of peace in the Cordillera and helped pave the way for the creation of the Cordillera Administrative Region in 1987.
As we mark the 40th Anniversary of the Mount Data SIPAT, we proudly remember Mount Data Hotel as the venue of this historic journey toward peace.
A historic place. A historic moment. A lasting legacy of peace.
