In 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, Syrian baker Ernest Hamwi created what would become an American food icon. π¦
When the ice cream vendor next to his booth ran out of dishes, Hamwi rolled his thin waffle-like pastries into cones, offering them as edible ice cream holders.
The combination was an instant hit with fairgoers. That simple solution helped launch the ice cream cone into widespread popularity across America. π§
Though Italian immigrant Italo Marchiony had patented a similar cone design a year earlier, it was this moment at the World's Fair that transformed how Americans would enjoy ice cream for generations to come. β¨
