Chochin paper lantern is a traditional form of illumination in Japan, made from washi paper carefully glued on a bamboo cane frame. These Lanterns are traditionally lit at Japanese festivals and also hung outside restaurants and inns. Crafted in Japan as far back as 1085, they have been used to light the night for centuries and have a special place in Japanese culture. They can be folded flat for storage, an example of Japanese design ingenuity.

Chochin are often seen outside Japanese restaurants. They are usually red or white. The writing on the side also announces the kind of food served within, whether it is sushi, ramen or udon noodles. Ukiyo-e, meaning โ€œpictures of the floating world,โ€ is a celebrated genre of Japanese art that flourished during the Edo period (1603โ€“1868). Created primarily through woodblock printing, Ukiyo-e made art accessible to everyday people, capturing the fleeting beauty of life, leisure, and nature in a rapidly changing society.

These prints often depicted kabuki actors, geisha, sumo wrestlers, landscapes, flora and fauna, and scenes of daily life. Each artwork was a collaborative effort between the artist, carver, printer, and publisher, requiring exceptional precision and craftsmanship. Natural pigments, delicate linework, and balanced compositions gave Ukiyo-e its distinctive aestheticโ€”flat areas of color, strong outlines, and a poetic sense of movement.

One of the most iconic masters of Ukiyo-e is Katsushika Hokusai, whose โ€œThe Great Wave off Kanagawaโ€ remains one of the most recognizable images in world art.
