Hi friends!

After 5 years, we are back at a very special pop-up. On Saturday, Oct 26, we are one of the vendors participating at Jewels Feast Ortigas District last event for 2024, Be LOVING. From 10am to 6pm, the event will feature talks on Love, Relationships, Family, and God's Faithful Love as well as Jewels Market, featuring women-owned small businesses. There will also book signings as well as raffle draws and free gifts. All you have to do is register at https://bit.ly/JewelsBeLoving, entrance is FREE!

Jewels Be Loving is a fundraising event for Jeremiah Foundation, a Feast Mercy Ministry taking care of teen females who are also sexual abuse survivors. We hope you can visit us at the event because we'd love to see you again and stay for the talks and the market, too.

Throwback 8 years ago when Jertie's Kitchen dark choco nibblers made its debut!

And because fairs like Flow in the City, Muni Market, and VegFest Pilipinas had not existed yet, we debuted these delicious nibblers at an omnivore food fair.

Of course people gave us confused looks when we presented them with gluten-free vegan nibblers (and brownies!).

But it started our gluten-free vegan journey and it was an awesome journey 😊

Nine years ago, we started Jertie’s Kitchen with the goal of providing dessert lovers with healthy and delicious dessert alternatives. This small business evolved and transitioned to become a gluten-free and vegan business three years later.

Since then, we have worked tirelessly to share awareness about the gluten-free and vegan lifestyle through cooking classes and our different food products, including our Signature Bestsellers Dark Choco Cake and Pinoy Longganisa.

For nine years, we’ve enjoyed meeting you in person and chatting with you about this lifestyle. You became our clients and our students, and became our good friends, too. We’ve worked and collaborated with the most creative and supportive people, businesses, organizations, and companies throughout the years.

It has been an amazing journey and we hope you learned from us as much as we have learned from all of you.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end.

And with this, we need to say So long for now. We’ve reached a point in our business where we need to focus on ourselves and our other ventures.

We may decide to preheat our ovens in pop-ups every now and then. And don’t worry, when we turn on that oven, we’ll let you know.

We won’t be totally gone. We’ll still be online to share and support each other’s gluten-free and vegan journeys with tips, stories, and recipes. We’re still going to see each other. And you do know where to find us.

We’re still accepting orders through The Vegan Grocer until September 30, 2020. And our timer will go off on October 1, 2020.

Thank you again, everyone. You have helped us become who we are today. And for that, we are always grateful.

Our first day for the Mobile-Edu Canteen last August 30, 2020. 100 kids taught by Teacher Remy in Las Piñas. With your PhP50, we were able to give them Monggo Bolognese, Tofu Tonkatsu and Juice. 💗😊 Every child and Teacher Remy were able to eat nutritious vegan food while learning.
Thank you so much for your generous donations. We had our 2nd Mobile-Edu Canteen last Sept. 6, 2020 too. 😊

What are the different gluten-free flours?

A lot of people are still confused about the different gluten-free flours available.

Unlike wheat, there are A LOT of gluten-free flours in the market.

There’s almond, chickpea (besan/gram), rice (brown or white), sorghum, gluten-free oat, teff, quinoa, coconut, banana, dal, corn, and fava bean. There could be more but these are the most commonly used.

At Jertie’s Kitchen, we use chickpea, brown rice, sorghum, or gluten-free oat, depending on what flour the product needs.

And of course, since these flours don’t have gluten (a binding agent), you’ll need starches and gums to hold it all together. For starches, there’s potato, tapioca, corn and cassava. And for gums, there’s xantham and guar gum. We use either tapioca or cassava starch, and guar gum. Sometimes, we’ll use potato starch for specific recipes.

Gluten-free baking can be complicated because you need to work with the right combination of flours and with the environment. Too much humidity can definitely ruin your gluten-free baking experience.
