🔴 Qiddiya’s National Tennis Centre: A New Landmark Set to Become the Region’s Largest Tennis Facility 🇸🇦🎾

Qiddiya Investment Company has unveiled the National Tennis Centre, a landmark development set to become the largest tennis facility in the region and a new global destination for the sport.

Nestled within the dramatic landscape of the Tuwaiq Mountains, the world-class complex will feature 30 tennis courts, including 28 hard courts and two clay courts, designed to host everything from grassroots participation to the world’s biggest international tournaments.

At its heart will be a 15,000-seat Centre Court with a retractable roof, complemented by an 8,000-seat multi-purpose arena, a 5,000-seat Court One, and a 2,000-seat Court Two. Together, the venue will accommodate approximately 33,000 spectators.

Beyond competition, the National Tennis Centre will include a high-performance training centre, athlete wellness and recovery facilities, community tennis programmes, public spaces, fan zones, and year-round recreational opportunities, creating a complete ecosystem for the growth of tennis in Saudi Arabia.

Designed by Populous, the renowned firm behind some of the world’s most iconic sports venues, the centre will not only host elite sporting events but also concerts, cultural events, and major entertainment experiences through its retractable-roof arenas.

As construction continues to advance, the National Tennis Centre represents another major milestone in Qiddiya City’s transformation into a global destination for sport, entertainment, and culture, while supporting Saudi Arabia’s ambition to develop future generations of tennis talent and attract the world’s biggest events.

4D model of Jeddah Tower ▶️

Here's a short video of our work last year - using 4D modelling to validate & communicate general method statements for various areas of the project.

This one was an option sequence for constructing the super-tall spire.

Amazing to see how Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) Ian Norman Miller Robert Bird Group Robbie Browne and everyone continuously working on the project.

It's simply awesome working on what will one day (soon) be the world's tallest building.

More details to follow on future posts.

Any questions or comments please drop them below - happy to answer anything or explain the process and tools we're using.

828 meters of concrete standing in desert soil… without failure.

The real story is not the height, it’s what happens underground.

Burj Khalifa is supported by a pile-raft foundation system:

• 📌 Deep bored piles transfer loads to stronger soil layers
• 📌 A thick reinforced raft distributes the load across the footprint
• 📌 Load is shared through skin friction + end bearing
• 📌 Settlement is controlled within strict design limits

In simple terms:
The tower doesn’t rely on weak surface soil, it bypasses it completely and goes deeper.

That’s the mindset of real engineering:
If the ground is weak, you don’t change the ground… you change the design.

🌉 Bridge Series: The "Crown Jewel" of Boston (Zakim Bridge)
When engineering meets architectural soul, the result is the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge.

If you think cable-stayed bridges are just about utility, think again. This bridge is a masterclass in hybrid design, asymmetrical engineering, and urban aesthetics.

🏗️ Why Engineers Admire the Zakim:
The World’s First Hybrid Asymmetry: The Zakim was the first "hybrid" cable-stayed bridge in the US, seamlessly blending steel (for the 745-ft main span) and concrete (for the back spans) into a single, efficient structural system.

The "Widest" Distinction: At 183 feet (56 meters) wide, it holds the record as one of the widest cable-stayed bridges on the planet, carrying 10 lanes of heavy traffic over the Charles River.

The Inverted-Y Towers: Swiss designer Christian Menn chose the iconic "inverted-Y" tower shape specifically to mirror the historic Bunker Hill Monument nearby—a perfect marriage of Boston’s future and its revolutionary past.

💡 The Engineering Challenge:
Building the Zakim wasn't just about the bridge; it was about the environment. It was constructed as the signature feature of the "Big Dig"—the most complex highway project in US history—while maintaining continuous traffic flow for I-93, Route 1, and the MBTA rail lines beneath it.

The structural efficiency of the cable arrangement allows it to span massive distances while keeping the deck looking light and graceful.

🧐 Did You Know?
The bridge's lighting isn't just for show. The blue and white illumination was designed to create a "regal entry" to the city. The lighting system was later upgraded to dynamic LEDs, reducing energy consumption by over 80% while allowing the city to change colors for holidays and special events!

Bridge Series Challenge: The Zakim is an asymmetrical wonder—what is the biggest challenge you’ve faced when designing or supervising structures in constrained urban environments? Let’s share some field experiences in the comments!

🔴 Major Milestone: Royal Commission for AlUla Approves AlUla Manara, a Future Global Hub for Astronomy and Astro-Tourism 🇸🇦🔭✨

The Board of Directors of the The Royal Commission for AlUla has approved the design of AlUla Manara, a landmark project set to position Saudi Arabia among the world’s leading destinations for astronomy, scientific research, and astro-tourism.

Located more than 70 km north of AlUla under some of the darkest and clearest skies in the region, the project will feature a world-class astronomical observatory equipped with a 4-meter primary telescope and two additional 2-meter telescopes, placing it among the largest observatories globally.

Inspired by AlUla’s unique natural and cultural landscape, AlUla Manara will include advanced research facilities, observation platforms, interactive exhibitions, and immersive visitor experiences designed to inspire future generations of scientists, researchers, and space enthusiasts.

Developed in collaboration with the Saudi Space Agency, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), and the SETI Institute, the project reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing ambitions in science, innovation, and space exploration while reinforcing AlUla’s position as a global destination for discovery and knowledge.

A remarkable addition to Vision 2030, where heritage, science, and the wonders of the universe come together beneath one of the world’s most spectacular night skies.

🔴 Major Connectivity Milestone: Saudi Arabia and Turkey Sign Railway & Logistics Agreements to Link the Gulf with Europe 🇸🇦🇹🇷🚆

In a significant step toward reshaping regional connectivity, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have signed new agreements on railway and logistics cooperation, laying the foundation for a future transport corridor connecting the Gulf region directly with Europe.

The initiative reflects a shared ambition to strengthen trade flows, improve supply chain resilience, and unlock faster movement of goods across key international markets.

By enhancing rail and logistics integration between the two countries, the project has the potential to reduce transit times, lower transportation costs, and create new economic opportunities across the Middle East.

The agreements also support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals of becoming a global logistics hub at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe.

As regional infrastructure networks continue to expand, this emerging corridor could become one of the most strategically important trade routes of the coming decades, reinforcing economic cooperation and connectivity across multiple continents.

A major milestone that highlights how infrastructure, logistics, and international partnerships are shaping the future of global trade.
