Marney Ward is a Canadian artist whose large, glowing watercolor flowers captivate at first sight. She’s been called a magician who captures the very essence of a flower.

Marney’s path to art was unusual. She was born in Ontario, Canada, and earned a PhD from the University of British Columbia, studying the art and poetry of William Blake.
This passion led her to a yoga teacher in Europe, and for the next ten years she devoted herself to transcendental meditation.

But her love of painting won. In the early 1990s, when her child started school, Marney decided to return to her first calling. She began with a Chinese painting class and later studied watercolor with many renowned masters.

🎨 Philosophy and technique
Why watercolor? Marney considers it the perfect medium. In her words: «With watercolor, the light comes from inside the painting, transformed by layers of pigment, just as a flower refracts sunlight through its petals.»
Her signature style is large, vivid images of flowers, often backlit and pierced by sunlight. She strives to put into every work a «tangible presence of light» and to reveal not only beauty but also her own spiritual connection to the natural world.

Her talent has been highly acclaimed. In 2011, Marney Ward received the highest status (SFCA) from the Federation of Canadian Artists. She has won over 20 awards, including «Best Work on Paper» at the Sidney Fine Art Show. She has been featured in International Artist and Watercolor Artist magazines, and her work appears in prestigious art annuals.

For over 20 years, Marney has taught watercolor classes, and since 2014 she has successfully run an 8‑week online course for students worldwide.
«In my work,» says Marney Ward, «I strive to reveal not only the essence of flowers, but also my own spiritual connection with nature.»

Meet artist Lauren Knode
(b. 1946, Oregon)

From a young age, art was in her blood. At just 10 years old, she copied Dürer’s “Praying Hands” — and her family took notice. Her grandfather was a cartoonist, her uncle Lew Merrell Jr. a talented painter who taught her: “Never be afraid of color.”

Lauren earned her Master’s in Painting & Art Education and went on to teach art in Oregon for over 20 years. A year in Italy deepened her love for light and atmosphere.

Her style? Think vibrant impressionist brushwork with a realist’s eye. Sunsets, flowers, streams — she captures the magic of everyday light.

In 2003 she moved to Arizona, and since 2004 she’s been a regular at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO in Scottsdale.

Her work hangs in private and corporate collections worldwide.

The very name “iris” translates from Greek as “rainbow.” It was given to the flower by Hippocrates in honor of the goddess Iris, who descended to earth on a rainbow bridge. And this name was chosen not by chance: the genus Iris covers nearly every conceivable shade, from snow-white to almost black.

⚜️ A royal impostor. The famous heraldic fleur-de-lis, which served for centuries as the symbol of the French kings, is not a lily at all. It is a stylized depiction of the yellow flag iris. According to legend, the flower showed King Clovis a safe ford before a battle and thereafter became an emblem of victory and purity.

Peter Barker (b. 1954, Banbury, Oxfordshire) grew up in the countryside, where birdwatching, fishing and caring for animals fostered his love of nature and an early talent for drawing. At 14 he took up golf and turned professional four years later. Despite notable wins, including the 1979 Bedfordshire Professional Championship, he left the sport in 1983 to pursue art. Largely self-taught but encouraged by artist Cesar Smith, he soon gained gallery recognition, exhibiting at Stamford Art Gallery (1985) and Ringstead Gallery (1987). His deep passion for the British countryside infuses his work, which was highlighted in a 1994 Anglia Television short film of him sketching on the River Welland. Working across genres—landscape, marine, wildlife, still life and portraiture—he employs oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolour, painting both en plein air and in his Rutland studio. His paintings are held in collections in the US and Australia, and demand continues to grow. He is an elected member of the Pastel Society (Frank Seldy Award, 2006), the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (Ranelagh Press Award) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists, exhibiting at London’s Mall Galleries.

Basil Ede (1931–2016) was an English wildlife artist specializing in bird portraiture. He is known for the ornithological accuracy of his paintings. He was born in Surrey, England, and educated at St. John’s School in Leatherhead before enrolling at the Kingston School of Art.

In 1949, he was conscripted into the British Army. After leaving the army at the end of 1951, Ede joined the Merchant Navy.

At the age of 25, Basil Ede traveled to the Far East, where he found inspiration in Asian art. He combined his two great interests: birds and drawing. In 1958, he began exhibiting in London at the Tryon Gallery, and from 1964 onward, he devoted himself entirely to ornithological painting.

In 1964, Ede became the first living artist to be granted a solo exhibition at the National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington, D.C.

In 1965, his first book, Birds of Town and Village, was published by Country Life Books, featuring thirty-six full-color illustrations of his work.

In 1971, Walter Annenberg commissioned Ede to paint a series of birds of eastern Pennsylvania for his private collection.

Following a severe stroke in 1989, Ede was left with a paralyzed right arm, yet he continued to paint using only his left hand.

Throughout his career, Ede traveled worldwide to observe birds in their natural habitats, taking photographs and making sketches. For more detailed study, he used museum specimens.

The precision of the finest details—colors, shapes, and plumage—brought the artist worldwide acclaim.

In 1991, the book Wild Birds of America: The Art of Basil Ede was published, presenting 103 color plates from the «Wild Birds of America» series, along with reproductions from Ede’s field notes and sketches.

Basil Ede was one of the founders of the Society of Wildlife Artists, as well as a life member and active supporter of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
