Saturday July 16th will be the last day that Beans on Butler has regular hours. The following paragraphs highlight the changes that will be occurring and why they were made.
We opened Beans on Butler in August of 2018 to better the lives of those living at Grand JiVante. As we developed the idea of Beans on Butler, we wanted an area where residents and tenants could go to socialize, to play cards, to have drinks and food you otherwise wouldn’t have. We also knew that if people were in wheelchairs or had dementia, it became exponentially harder for families to take their loved ones out for a meal. All these reasons are which led us to having a coffee shop here. And we thought if we were going to have it onsite for residents and tenants, we would open it up to the community as well.
A lot of things have changed in these past five years since Beans opened. First, our demographics in the nursing home. The individuals we care for tend to have higher intensity care needs, have more advanced dementia, or require more supervision. Thus, they are not able to frequent Beans as much as residents a few years ago. Secondly, another coffee shop has opened on Main Street. We believe as a non-profit organization we should focus on business opportunities that are not being addressed by for-profits. When we opened Beans, we had it open to the community since there was nothing else like it in Ackley. Since there is now something else like it, we should let them focus on serving the Ackley community and we focus on another avenue-the original and main goal of Beans as to enhance the lives of those living at GJV. That is what we are doing.
As stated previously, Saturday July 16th will be the last day that Beans has regular hours for the community. Beginning in August, here is what Beans will look like:
• Monthly coffee groups will still occur in Beans with a group for the nursing facility and a group for independent and assisted living.
• Two weekend activities per month on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month to begin the 4th Saturday of August. These events will be open to the nursing facility, assisted living, and independent living tenants as well as the community. Watch for more details on this!
• Happy hours will now occur at Beans every Friday for the nursing facility, assisted living, and independent living tenants. Drinks and appetizers available and free to those that attend.
• Every Wednesday, special lunches at Beans for nursing facility, assisted living, and independent living tenants. Free for all that attend.
• Beans will still be open to play cards in, as a social area, and to rent out if you want it for a bigger family or event get together.
