Another common question I get is, How do you know which bee is the queen? And how is the queen chosen? In reality, queens are not chosen. They are born. πŸ‘‘πŸ

It begins when the worker bees in the hive select a tiny larvae (less than a day old!) and begin feeding that larvae a special diet of royal jelly. By feeding it this special food, the larvae develops into a queen rather than a regular worker bee.

As this photo shows, the queen bee clearly looks different from all the other bees in the hive. She has a shiny thorax and a long abdomen so that she can lay the thousands of eggs needed to keep her colony going.
