On April 25th, 1984, "Novak's Hungarian Paprikas" opened for business in the Santiam Hwy location we occupied for our first 19 years. With hard work, faith and amazing food, Mama, Papa and Karen created a place where beautiful, delicious, heart-warming memories were made for nearly 40 years!

We remain forever grateful,
Matilda & Karen Novak

Note: The manuscript for "Hard Work and Faith, the Journey of Joseph and Matilda Novak" is completed. The book is still "under construction". We'll keep you posted.

In working on the book update, we’ve learned some things about our father’s work-life that we never knew before:

“I had worked there [a paper-box manufacturing plant] for about six months when one day, the owner called me in and asked me to be the manager of the company.

There, I developed a new process for recycling cardboard that was printed on one side and was going to be dumped. We started making inexpensive boxes with the printed side facing in, for people who didn’t care if it was pretty on the inside. I sold those boxes by the ton, and it was very profitable.”

The original storybook was produced at a time when we were in our Heritage Way location (which seated 120). The restaurant was open seven days a week, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday Brunch. There just wasn’t much time to go through photos and newspaper articles. The updated version of their story will have at least four times that many!

In April 2010, Mama and Papa were honored by the National Restaurant Association as a Faces of Diversity American Dream Award winner. As we work on bringing you the expanded edition of "Hard Work and Faith: The Journey of Joseph and Matilda Novak," we thought it would be a perfect time to share this video with you.

May there be Comfort for those who mourn, and may happy memories help sustain all for whom this is a less than “merry” time.
We love and appreciate you!

Beloved Friends,

Thanksgiving has always been our favorite holiday. And we've always had so much for which to be Thankful.

We are grateful for all the years we were able to host our free traditional Thanksgiving dinners at the restaurant, grateful for the generous and loving hearts of our dear parents, who found wonderful ways to "give back"..... And ever so thankful for the many beautiful friends who became part of our lives through the restaurant.

Heartfelt gratitude to you all, and to those who've continued to support us through the www.novaks.square.site, Thank You. This will close permanently at the end of November (tonight).

We want also to thank our dear friends at The Natty Dresser, DAILY ENERGY Nutrition Store, Oregon Peppertree, Spearit Beads & Co. and the downtown location of Margin Coffee Roasters for making our books available in their shops. They will be continue to be carried by all but Margin.

Wishing you all a most blessed Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and trusting your hearts will Always find that for which you are thankful.
