Celebrate Doyo no Ushi no Hi (Unagi Day) With A Very Special Bento Box


In Japan, summer has a delicious tradition called Doyo no Ushi no Hi, or Midsummer Day of the Ox. On this day, families and friends enjoy unagi — grilled eel brushed with a savory-sweet sauce — as a way to bring strength and energy during the hottest days of the year.

Nakato is honored to share this Japanese summer tradition with our guests through a special Unagi Bento, available for pre-sale pickup on Sunday July 26th and in-house dining, for $35.

Nakato's Unagi Day Bento Box Includes:

- Unagi Don, Grilled freshwater eel with kabayaki glaze over steamed rice
- Ebi Shinjo Hasami Age, Lightly fried shrimp mousse fritter between shiitake mushroom caps
- Ebi Nasu Miso Itame, Shrimp and eggplant sautéed in savory miso
- Tamagoyaki, Japanese rolled omelet
- Horenso Goma-ae, Spinach dressed in a roasted sesame sauce
- Oshinko, Japanese pickled vegetables

This year, we'll be making someone's wish come true!

For the past 50+ years, the Nakato family has loved sharing Japanese traditions with our guests, and today kicks off one of our owner, Sachi Nakato Takahara's, favorite Japanese holidays, Tanabata.

Tanabata or The Stars Festival celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikososhi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair). According to legend, the Milky Way separates the two deities, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the calendar (July 7th).

It is Japanese tradition to write down your wishes to celebrate Tanabata, and place them on bamboo stalks. Every year we decorate our dining room at Nakato with these traditional bamboo stalks and have paper and pens available for our guests to write down their wishes throughout the month of July.

And this year, we're kicking things up a notch - we'll be granting one person's wish at the end of July! Make sure you join us for dinner throughout the month and write your wish down, because we just might make it come true!
