Meeting the Founder of Sam's #3 Diners in 1964
The original Sam's location, at 15th and Curtis, was started by Greek immigrant Sam Armatas in 1927. My late father, Harold Coffman, knew Sam Armatas from his youth in growing up in Denver.
My father dropped out of school after the 8th grade and sold newspapers in the same area where he got to know Sam Armatas. In 1943, at age 15, my father lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a rear seat gunner in a dive bomber in the Pacific.
My late grandmother had second thoughts about her son serving in the war and in 1944, at age 16, she turned my father in for being underage.
My father was subsequently discharged from the Navy and returned to Denver where, within 90 days of being back, he lied about his age again and this time enlisted in the U.S. Army.
He was sent to Europe as an infantry rifleman and this time my grandmother did not interfere. My father would later serve in the Korean War where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and was wounded in combat.
After the Korean War, my father transferred to the Army Medical Corps and for his last assignment, before retiring, requested to return to his home state of Colorado and was assigned to Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora.
My first visit to Denver was with my father, in 1964, where he took me to meet Sam Armatas at his little restaurant at 15th and Curtis. I will never forget Sam Armatas, with his Greek accent, telling me, an impressionable 9-year-old, that I should be very proud of my father because "he is a very brave man."
After 25 years in business in Aurora, the Sam's #3 diner will be closing at the end of the year. Out of the three Sam's #3 Denver metro area locations, the Aurora location is the only one where the building is not owned by a San's #3 operator. I'm hoping that they will find another location in Aurora.
In the photo is Sam Armatas' grandson, Patrick Armatas, earlier this week at the Stampede where we were both at the annual meeting for the Havana Business Improvement District where Patrick, who manages Sam's #3 in Aurora, is a board member.
