Sunday, we completed our annual “Day with a Cop” experience, which is auctioned off each year at the Avilla Elementary School Carnival. Officer Huff had the pleasure of spending a few hours with two young boys who were excited to see what it’s really like to be a police officer. Their family are tremendous supporters of law enforcement, and their enthusiasm made the day even more enjoyable.
We started our adventure with a stop at a donut shop in Kendallville to enjoy what many would call a police officer’s favorite food. From there, we visited the Noble County Communications Dispatch Center, where the dispatchers gave us an inside look at what happens when someone calls 911. The boys learned just how important dispatchers are and saw firsthand the incredible amount of multitasking and coordination that takes place behind the scenes every day.
Next, we headed to the Avilla Police Department, where the boys got to tour the station, try on tactical helmets, and handle ballistic shields. They asked great questions and were eager to learn about the equipment officers use to help keep the community safe.
To top off the day, Officer Huff had a special surprise waiting for them. We traveled to a safe area where the boys got to activate the patrol car’s emergency lights and siren. Their smiles said it all! They had an absolute blast and soaked up every moment of the experience.
Programs like this help build positive relationships between law enforcement and our community while giving young people a chance to learn about the people and responsibilities behind the badge.
If you missed out this year, be sure to attend the next Avilla Elementary School Carnival and place your bid on next year’s “Day with a Cop” experience. You never know what adventures might be waiting!
