This 4th of July, we're proud to celebrate the veterans who recently completed the PGA HOPE program at Bandon Dunes.

PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) introduces veterans and active-duty military to the game of golf through a six-week curriculum led by PGA Professionals, using the game to support physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being.

Thank you to the 25 veterans who joined us, our eight PGA HOPE instructors, and everyone who helps make this program possible. Happy Independence Day!

25 years ago today, Pacific Dunes opened for play, taking a step toward Mike Keiser's now-famous belief that "one course is a curiosity, two is a destination."

Every course's opening day at the resort has been celebrated with a one of a kind scorecard, and to mark the 25th anniversary, our friend Sam Van Galder took the original design and brought it to life with his beautiful artwork.

Most visitors to Bandon Dunes make their way to McKee’s Pub at some point during their stay. Many will think that it honors a magical watering hole somewhere in Scotland or Ireland – and therefore is a fitting tribute to the birthplace of the game. But it is named for the man who pioneered much of what is seen at the resort today. Howard McKee was Mike Keiser’s partner and one of his most trusted advisors on the development, design, and vision for Bandon Dunes.

During his illustrious career, Howard helped create Oregon's land use laws and led teams that designed innumerable projects around the globe - each challenging conventional thinking to preserve the human spirit in urban design. The creation of Bandon Dunes is what Howard considered ‘soul-work’. Conceiving the original Master Plan still in use today, Howard located the pristine stretch of sand dunes on which Bandon Dunes was developed and then led the team that secured permits to move forward. His was a vision of golf and infrastructure honoring the environment in which it is created, of a pure challenge in the spirit of the game, all uncluttered by manmade amenities. Howard passed away in 2007 after a long battle with cancer.

Howard was a thinker and a visionary. Those who had the opportunity to work directly with him were amazed at how affable - and at the same time uncompromising - he could be on the vision. Others know him only through the golf experience that he leaves behind for all of us to enjoy. As you sit in the Pub and recap your round of golf or plot your next visit to Bandon Dunes, we ask that you raise a toast to Howard McKee and his indispensable contribution to the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort you know today.

The legend goes that many years ago, Shorty Dow, caretaker of the land that would become Bandon Dunes, searched far and wide for an elusive black bear throughout the property. This story led to the inspiration behind the logo for what is now our 19-hole par three course named in Shorty's honor.

Recently, a juvenile black bear was spotted on property, and we couldn't help but wonder if it might be a descendant of the very bear Shorty once tracked across these dunes.

Either way, it was a fantastic wildlife sighting, and a reminder that the land at Bandon Dunes is shared by many, humans and animals alike.
