One of the finest and longest running businesses in North Gate (Tiger Town) history was Co-Op Bookstore. Co-Op was founded by W.A. Prescott in 1933, six years before even Glenn Miller's swing classic, "In the Mood," hit the airwaves. Later, sons Billy and Bob Prescott ran the business. Co-Op sold textbooks, art supplies, architectural supplies, and collegiate gifts. Over the decades, Co-Op had three locations in Tiger Town - two on Chimes St. near Highland Road and one on State St. in the University Shopping Center. In 2005, after 72 years in Tiger Town, the Prescott's built a beautiful building on Burbank Dr. and moved the Co-Op there. The Prescott brothers retired from the book business in 2017 and closed their legendary business. Co-Op left a lasting legacy of service to the LSU community and is fondly remembered today. (The musical background for our Instagram post on Co-Op Bookstore was Glenn Miller's recording of the classic "In the Mood" from 1939.)

Every time we receive a shipment of green coffee, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the farmers in the producing countries who grow this amazing product. There are countless people who work very hard in the long chain of activity to bring coffee from the seedling trees at the start all the way to the baristas in our shop and to your kitchen at home. In this social media age, often the ones who are the loudest get the most attention. The coffee farmers are certainly not the loudest among all of those involved with coffee, but they quietly do the most important work. We think they deserve a little more love for what they bring to the world. (The music accompaniment to this post on Instagram, if you would like to sing along, was the lovely 1972 duet "Where is the Love" by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway.)

We get some pretty nice sunsets at the North Gates looking right down Chimes St. I think about all of the LSU students who have walked down Chimes St. and seen the setting sun for almost 100 years - from the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, 2000's, 2010's, and 2020's. (Muisc accompaniment on our Instagram Story was the beautiful "Slowdown Sundown" by Steve Winwood.)

Last week we posted a tribute on Instagram to Louie's Café, our wonderful North Gate neighbor. We decided to share it with you, our friends on Facebook, too. (The Instagram post music accompaniment of "The Best is Yet to Come" sung by Frank Sinatra will have to be added in your own mind since it seems businesses cannot add music to their FB traditional posts...)

We love being a part of the historic North Gates (Tiger Town) district. This neighborhood was created at the entrance to the campus when LSU moved here from downtown in the 1920's. The legendary Louie's Café has been here almost since the beginning - 85 years and counting! Established by Louie Sisk in 1941 as Louie's Dutch Mill, the restaurant had only 14 seats and featured a menu of simple breakfast options, freshly made cheeseburgers and fries, and sandwiches. The current owner, Jimmy Wetherford, took over in 1978. He expanded the menu to include their world-famous omelets and hash browns, along with many other delicious items. Louie's moved to a larger location on State St. in 1986. After almost thirty years on State St., in 2014 Louie's moved to its current space a few doors down on Lake St., still in the shadow of the Campanile. For over eight decades Louie's has been serving the university community and creating wonderful memories for all of us. Thank you, Jimmy and all of the employees of Louie's!

Betsy Braud, a local nurse and musician, will be performing in the Highland Coffees courtyard on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 PM, weather permitting. She plays the flute and other instruments and will sometimes have musician-friends join her. Betsy loves the neighborhood and has played music on Chimes St. going back to the 1970's. (Acme Bookstore was in the building where Inga's Subs is now.) Please stop by if you can to enjoy some great music.

Fibbra, a local band paying a mix of funk, jazz, pop, and R & B, will perform at Highland Coffees Friday evening, July 1st, starting at 7:30 PM. These talented musicians played at Highland Coffees a few times while they were still in high school and sounded great. Now they are in college and home on summer break. Come by for a fun music experience. You will be glad you did.

Our current art show is a series of photographs taken by Phil Ward back in the late-1960's and early-1970's. Phil, who now lives in Colorado, took these photos of people and places near LSU and downtown Baton Rouge when he was a student. The theme of Phil's show is Carpe Diem, Seize the Day. The people in these photos look like they could be students today, but the photos were taken fifty years ago. Current LSU students viewing this photography show could be the grandchildren of the people in the photos. Many of the people and locations captured in the show will look familiar to those who lived downtown or near LSU back around 1970. The first photo, however, called, "The Girl Upstairs," is of a neighbor whose name the photographer cannot remember. She lived upstairs from Phil in 1971 at 604 Boyd Ave. (now Spanish Town Road) downtown when Phil took this photo.
