A 13-year-old girl was stabbed to death by a 10-year-old boy during a large fight involving up to 40 teenagers outside a Houston apartment complex Wednesday night.

Riley DeArmas died at the hospital after being stabbed during the chaotic brawl at Quail Creek Apartments. Police say the boy told officers he stabbed her in self-defense.

The disturbance may have started earlier at school then carried over into the evening. Investigators believe a larger group came over and started assaulting people before the stabbing.

The boy is at the minimum age of criminal responsibility in Texas, meaning charges could be filed. The Harris County District Attorney's Office will decide whether to prosecute. Homicide detectives are searching for surveillance video.
