The Face Behind the Posts
Many times, we scroll through a business or organization's page without thinking about the person behind it, the one creating the posts, writing the captions, sharing community news, answering messages, and trying to help keep everyone informed.
For Beattyville Main Street, that person is me, Teresa Mays, Beattyville Main Street Director.
About 99% of what you see on this page is posted by me. While some of that happens during my workday, some of it also happens in the evenings, on weekends, and whenever I come across something I think our community would want to know about.
Facebook is an incredible free tool. It helps us share news, celebrate accomplishments, promote local businesses, and keep people connected to what's happening in Beattyville. Like anything, it has its downsides. Sometimes it's easier to be more critical behind a screen than it is face-to-face. But I still believe it's one of the best ways to communicate with our community, and I genuinely enjoy using it for that purpose.
One thing many people don't realize is that Beattyville Main Street operates on a very modest annual operating budget of just $2,000. That funding helps with events, publications, decorations, and many of the things we do throughout the year. We work hard to stretch every dollar as far as it will go.
Beyond that, we are constantly searching for grant opportunities, sponsorships and outside funding for specific projects and purposes. A recent example of that is the AARP Community Challenge Grant, which will allow us to improve the Main Street Mile with new signage, benches, and crosswalk enhancements.
I'm proud of what we're able to accomplish with the resources we have. Every event, grant, improvement, and promotion is made possible through city support, community partnerships, volunteers, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Yes, we sometimes use tools like Canva and ChatGPT to help us work more efficiently, just as many organizations do. But we also believe in supporting local talent and, whenever our budget allows, we hire local artists, photographers, musicians, and other creatives because investing in our own community is part of what Main Street is all about.
Thank you to everyone who follows this page, shares our posts, attends our events, supports our local businesses, and cheers us on. It truly means more than you know.
Here's to continuing to tell Beattyville's story, one post at a time.
