Continuing our showcase of the recently released lottery whiskeys from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, this Whiskey Wednesday we’re pouring Eagle Rare 17 Year. At 101 proof, drinks steady and controlled, not hot, especially for something that has spent nearly two decades in a barrel.
A lot of oak, vanilla, and to***co on the nose. Less sweetness than you might expect. The palate brings caramel and baking spice, but it stays structured. Some leather, some dark fruit, and a finish that hangs on without getting harsh.
What separates Eagle Rare 17 Year from the other bottles in the BTAC lineup is balance. It is not trying to be the biggest pour on the table. It is just very put together, a mature and balanced archetypal whiskey.
MSRP is around $150, but that number doesn’t really matter because it’s almost never available in stores and secondary pricing gets ridiculously high, going for upwards of $1,000 a bottle.
