From braces to BBQs, summer is off to a strong start.

Hi Friends!

This week our house slowly started feeling a little more like home.

With summer just around the corner, we’ve spent the week welcoming friends and family over to see the new place, catch up, and help us settle into this next chapter. It’s been a wonderful reminder that while moving boxes eventually get unpacked, it’s the people who walk through the front door that truly make a house feel like home.

We’re also preparing for another big transition in our family as Olivia gets ready to head down to San Diego for the summer to spend time with her mother. If you know Olivia, you know she lives her best Hannah Montana life — one foot in Montana and one foot in California. From the Beartooth Pass to the Pacific Ocean, she gets the best of both worlds.

This week also brought another milestone: braces! Olivia was incredibly excited to get them put on… right up until later that evening when the aches and pains started reminding her that orthodontics is a long-term investment. In what feels like a perfectly Olivia fashion, her final day of elementary school was also her first — and last — day wearing braces as an elementary student. Quite the entrance and exit before returning in the fall as a middle schooler.

At the café and library, things were pleasantly quiet this week. If you stopped by on Saturday, you may have caught Omar and me tackling our end-of-month deep cleaning and inventory projects as we prepare for what is always one of our busiest and most exciting seasons of the year. Summer at the café has a rhythm all its own, and we’re looking forward to welcoming both familiar faces and new visitors through the doors.

As for the weather, it looks like Montana is planning to give us a little bit of everything this week. A few rainy days, a brief stretch of sunshine in the middle, and what I can only assume will turn into humid, cloudy summer weather by week’s end. So naturally, this week’s menu follows suit. We’ll lean into some chilled, bright, and refreshing flavors for those warmer afternoons while still keeping a few cozy comforts around for the rainy days at the beginning of the week.

School is out, summer is arriving, and the days are stretching a little longer. Around here, that’s always something worth celebrating.

Now, let’s turn the page and dive into this week’s specials!

🌆 Community Highlights

🏓🍻 SCHEELS Pickleball Social
📅 Monday, June 1, 2026 • 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
📍 Meadowlark Brewing Co.

Looking for a fun way to kick off June and ease into summer? The SCHEELS Pickleball Social returns to Meadowlark Brewing this week, offering a laid-back evening of friendly competition, community, and plenty of laughs on the court.

Whether you’re a seasoned pickleball player or simply looking for an excuse to get outside and try something new, this event is designed for all skill levels. Courts are reserved in 30-minute blocks, giving everyone an opportunity to play, socialize, and enjoy one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in the country.

One of the things I love about events like this is that they’re less about winning and more about gathering. Much like a library or a neighborhood café, they’re another reminder that community often happens in the simple moments — sharing a game, meeting someone new, and spending a summer evening outside.

So grab a paddle, bring a friend, and enjoy an evening of movement, laughter, and local community. Registration is free, but court reservations are required.

🎵📚 Books & Babies: Music Edition
📅 Saturday, June 6, 2026 • 10:15 AM
📍 Story Tower, Billings Public Library

One of the library’s most beloved early childhood programs continues this week with Books & Babies: Music Edition, a special musical spin on the popular program designed for children ages 0–2 and their caregivers.

Through stories, songs, movement, and hands-on musical play, little ones are introduced to language and literacy in a fun and engaging way. Research continues to show that music helps build important early language skills, making this a wonderful opportunity to bond with your child while supporting their development through play.

As a parent myself, I can tell you there’s something special about watching young children discover music. Whether it’s clapping along to a song, shaking an instrument for the first time, or simply hearing a story read aloud, these moments create connections that last long after the program ends. If you have a little one at home, this is a fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning together at the library.

And if you’ve ever seen Benicio running around the library, you already know I have a soft spot for programs that help create the next generation of readers, musicians, and lifelong library lovers.

🍲🥗 Soups & Salads of the Week

As summer begins to settle in, we’re embracing the best of both worlds this week: fresh, crisp salads showcasing peak-season produce and hearty soups perfect for those cooler rainy evenings.

🍅🌿 Vegetable Minestrone
A classic Italian vegetable soup featuring tomatoes, beans, pasta, and seasonal vegetables simmered together in a savory herb broth. Bright, comforting, and packed with garden flavor, it’s the perfect bridge between spring and summer.

🦐🔥 Chicken & Sausage Gumbo
A rich and flavorful Southern classic featuring tender chicken, savory sausage, vegetables, and rice simmered together in a deeply seasoned broth. Hearty, satisfying, and exactly the kind of bowl that makes a rainy afternoon feel a little cozier.

🦐🥗 Shrimp Louie Salad
One of my personal favorites and perfectly timed for the season. Crisp peak-season lettuces are topped with chilled shrimp, cucumber, tomato, hard-boiled egg, avocado, and our house Louie dressing. Fresh, vibrant, and packed with texture, this classic West Coast salad feels right at home during the first warm days of summer.

There’s a reason Shrimp Louie has been a favorite for generations — it manages to feel indulgent and refreshing all at once. This week, with our lettuces at their absolute best, it might just be the star of the menu.

🌟📅 This Week at SG Book Café

🥩🥖 The Big Sky Dip

Our Montana-inspired take on the classic French Dip.

Slow-roasted beef is piled high onto a toasted hoagie roll with melted provolone, caramelized onions, and a touch of horseradish cream, then served with rich house-made au jus for dipping. Savory, hearty, and packed with flavor, it’s everything you love about a French Dip with a little Montana café personality mixed in.

The Big Sky Dip feels right at home this week — substantial enough for a rainy afternoon, but still perfect alongside a crisp summer salad or bowl of soup.

And let’s be honest, few things are more satisfying than a sandwich that requires both hands and a stack of napkins.

✨ Café Lunch Special — $9.99
Enjoy a ½ Big Sky Dip, paired with your choice of:

a cup of soup (Chicken & Sausage Gumbo or Vegetable Minestrone), or

a side salad (Shrimp Louie Salad),

plus a bag of chips.

The boxes are unpacking slowly, but the café is fully caffeinated.

Hi Friends!

Well… we are officially moved in.

And naturally, because the universe has a sense of humor, it rained nearly every single day of the move and didn’t seem to stop until the very last box came out of the U-Haul. Between the rain slowing things down and me taking a little slip that put us behind schedule by a day, I want to once again thank everyone for the patience and understanding with the café closure this week.

Of course, the chaos didn’t stop there. While I was at the library Thursday afternoon preparing Friday dinner, weekend pastries, and a charcuterie board for our friends over at Four Seasons Real Estate… the power suddenly went out.

The eerie stillness that settled over the library, followed by the look everyone immediately gave each other waiting to see if the generators would kick on, honestly sent me into a manic little laugh. At that point, I should’ve known Murphy’s Law was operating at full strength this week. Thankfully, the brief panic of figuring out which kitchen I was about to relocate my entire operation into was short-lived, and the sudden symphony of beeping electronics let us know the Amish lifestyle experiment had officially ended.

Amidst what definitely felt like organized chaos this week, this Memorial Day weekend and Sunday ahead will hopefully be filled with unpacking boxes, swapping out dryer cords because apparently 3-prong and 4-prong outlets are mortal enemies, family BBQs, and taking a little time to remember and honor all those who sacrificed so our families can enjoy the freedoms and lives we have today. And yes — one of you absolutely told me to check the dryer plug situation before moving. Whoever you are, I owe you a coffee.

This week at the café, we’re officially easing into summer with June right around the corner. Cold brew season has officially begun, iced teas and Arnold Palmers will be flowing, and some of our favorite warm-weather drinks are making their return — including Honey Cinnamon Cold Brew with sweet cream, fruit smoothies, and lemonade slushies.

As for the food, it’s time for grilled meats, sweet fruit, juicy tomatoes, fresh salads, and long evenings.

It’s the final week of school for the kids, Olivia may be getting braces this week as we wait for the orthodontist to call us, graduation season is everywhere, and honestly… summer has never looked so good.

Now, let’s turn the page and dive into this week!

📍 Billings Drinking Water Plant

Ever wondered what actually happens before water reaches your kitchen sink, coffee pot, or the café espresso machine? This week, the City of Billings is opening the doors to the public for a behind-the-scenes look at the Billings Drinking Water Plant during their Public Works Open House.

📖☕ Turning Page Book Group
📅 Wednesday, May 28, 2026 • 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
📍 Billings Public Library

The Billings Public Library’s beloved Turning Page Book Group returns this week, inviting readers to gather, sip coffee, and spend an evening talking books together in the Yellowstone Board Room. The group uses selections from the library’s Book Club Kit collection, making it easy for readers to join in whether you’ve been attending for years or are thinking about stopping by for the very first time.

There’s something especially comforting about book clubs this time of year. As school winds down, summer approaches, and life starts getting busier, it feels nice to slow down for an evening and simply talk stories with other people who love reading as much as you do.

And honestly, there’s something kind of perfect about gathering inside the library on a rainy spring evening with a warm drink and a good conversation about books. That’s the kind of community space that never really goes out of style.

Bring your favorite mug, grab a coffee beforehand, and settle in for a cozy evening with fellow readers.

🍲🥗 Soups & Salads of the Week

This week’s soups and salads are all about easing into summer while still embracing the cozy rainy days Montana keeps throwing at us. Fresh herbs, sweet berries, comforting broths, and bright seasonal ingredients make this week’s lineup feel equal parts comforting and refreshing.

🌽🥣 Corn Chowder
A creamy, comforting soup filled with tender corn, potatoes, carrots, celery, and red peppers, finished with a subtle smoky bacon flavor throughout. Rich enough to feel cozy on rainy afternoons while still carrying the sweetness and brightness of early summer produce.

🍝🥣 Italian Wedding Soup
Tiny pasta, savory meatballs, fresh greens, and rich broth come together in this longtime classic that somehow always feels comforting no matter the season. Warm, hearty, and perfect paired alongside this week’s Poma Pizza Sandwich.

🥗 Summer Pesto Berry Salad
Local spring greens, arugula, and baby spinach layered with fresh raspberries, marinated cherry tomatoes, mozzarella pearls, cucumber, toasted almonds, and grilled sourdough croutons, finished with a bright basil pesto vinaigrette. Fresh, herbaceous, sweet, and full of summery flavor.

🌟📅 This Week at SG Book Café

🥖🍕 The Poma Pizza Sandwich

Returning this week by request of two of our favorite café kids, Omar and Olivia, the Poma Pizza Sandwich is back just in time to celebrate the final stretch of the school year.

Our toasted baguette is smothered in savory marinara sauce, layered with fresh mozzarella and pepperoni, then finished with fresh herbs and baked until warm, melty, and perfectly crisp around the edges. Equal parts pizza, sandwich, and pure comfort food nostalgia, the Poma has quietly become one of those menu items that feels deeply tied to our family and the café itself.

And honestly, the Poma has a story connected to our family and some of our favorite memories together — so if you stop by and order one this week, don’t forget to ask about it.

✨ Café Lunch Special — $9.99
Enjoy a ½ Poma Pizza Sandwich, paired with your choice of:

a cup of soup (Corn Chowder or Italian Wedding Soup), or

a side salad (Summer Pesto Berry Salad),

plus a bag of chips.

🍰 Daily Baked Specials

This week’s pastry case officially starts leaning into summer — bright citrus, flaky pastries, buttery croissants, and cozy savory bites perfect for rainy mornings and busy afternoons between graduation parties, moving boxes, and cold brew runs.

🍓🥐 Strawberry Cheese Danish — Tuesday & Thursday
Flaky, buttery Danish pastry filled with sweet cream cheese and topped with fresh strawberry filling. Bright, fruity, and exactly the kind of pastry that feels right alongside an iced coffee and a little sunshine peeking through the clouds.

🥓🧀 Canadian Bacon & Cheese Puffs — Available Wednesday & Friday
Flaky pastry wrapped around smoky Canadian bacon, melty cheese, and just a touch of mustard for balance. Delicious warm or cold and perfect for breakfast on the go. Special shoutout to our forever librarian friend Heather, who requested something nostalgic to help cure a childhood craving — we understood the assignment.

🥐 Fresh Baked Butter Croissants — Available All Week
We’ve been working on a new croissant recipe focused on a lighter, airier texture with buttery layers throughout. Crisp on the outside, soft and delicate in the center, and perfect with coffee, jam, or simply all by themselves.

🍋🥧 Key Lime Pie — Available All Week
Cool, creamy, tart, and exactly the kind of dessert that signals summer is finally around the corner. Tangy key lime filling nestled inside a buttery graham crust and topped with whipped cream for the perfect balance of sweet and citrusy brightness.

This week feels a little like finally coming up for air after the chaos of moving, rainstorms, power outages, and living surrounded by cardboard boxes for what felt like an eternity. Somehow, despite all of it, this community continued showing up with kindness, patience, support, and encouragement — and honestly, we don’t take that for granted for even a second.

Now that the boxes are slowly disappearing and summer is starting to peek around the corner, we’re excited to settle back into rhythm at the café, lean into the season ahead, and continue sharing meals, coffee, stories, and community together.

Hi Friends,

Due to the weather and being just slightly behind schedule with our move, I’ll be spending today at the café working on a catering order and preparing for tomorrow’s Friday take-out meal.

The good news is — we are officially moved out of the old house and unofficially moved into the new one, complete with cardboard boxes, missing coffee mugs, and seemingly everything imaginable out of place.

I truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding with this extra day of the café being closed while we get settled. Your support over the years is what has made this move possible for my family, and we’re incredibly grateful for it.

I’ll see you all tomorrow at the café — or at your doorstep with Friday dinner.

With gratitude,
Oscar

This week’s menu pairs well with cardboard boxes and rain.

Hi Friends!

It’s officially moving week for my family!

After a very fun week at the café filled with beautiful weather, Library Con, and seeing so many familiar faces throughout the library, we honestly couldn’t have planned the timing any better… although hilariously, it does appear it’s going to rain the next few days while we move. Very Montana of the universe, honestly.

We’ve been packing for what feels like an entire month now and somehow still feel like there’s so much left to do. Thankfully, it’s officially become an all-hands-on-deck situation around here. The kids will be spending a few nights with my mother Cynthia, while my sisters, brother-in-law, close friends, and family descend upon our house armed with cardboard boxes, packing tape, and what I can only assume will become mild emotional damage from carrying furniture down stairs. In just a few short hours I’ll be picking up the U-Haul, and I think that’s when the move will finally start feeling real.

This week’s newsletter will be a little shorter, a little simpler, and hopefully still just as savory. For our new friends joining us for your very first Stomping Grounds Book Café newsletter — welcome! Please bear with me this week as my family and I juggle moving boxes, coffee, children, and whatever inevitably gets misplaced first.

Before we dive in, a reminder to all our friends that the café will be closed May 18th, 19th, and 20th while my family moves into our new home. We’ll return for normal business hours on Wednesday, May 21st, and yes — we will absolutely still be offering a Friday take-out dinner on the 22nd because apparently I enjoy keeping life exciting for myself.

Now, let’s turn the page and dive into this week!

🍲🥗 Soups & Salads of the Week

This week’s soups and salads lean fully into cozy café weather — rainy mornings, cloudy afternoons, and the kind of meals that make you want to slow down a little and linger over coffee longer than you probably planned to. Warm, layered, and comforting in all the best ways.

🌿🥣 Cream of Asparagus Soup
Back again by request for those who missed it the first time around — and for everyone else who has been craving another bowl since. Fresh asparagus simmered with aromatics and finished with cream for a velvety soup that feels light enough for spring while still bringing plenty of cozy comfort to rainy days.

🦞🥣 Lobster Bisque
This soup and I go way back. Back in my chef days, lobster bisque was something I made almost daily, and honestly, this rainy stretch of weather feels like the perfect excuse to bring it back around. Rich lobster stock, cream, aromatics, sherry, and delicate seafood flavor come together into a silky, deeply comforting bowl that somehow manages to transport you straight to the coast — even if you’re sitting inside the library watching rain hit the windows.

🥗 Warm Brussels & Pear Salad
Shaved Brussels sprouts, arugula, and spring mix layered with roasted pears, thick-cut smoked bacon, roasted almonds, dried cherries, crispy shallots, and parmesan crisps, finished with a warm brown butter sherry vinaigrette. Earthy, smoky, sweet, and packed with texture, this salad feels tailor-made for cozy rainy spring afternoons.

🍰 Daily Baked Specials

This week’s pastry case is keeping things a little simpler, a little cozier, and very much built for rainy weather, moving boxes, and coffee breaks that accidentally turn into much longer coffee breaks. Sometimes the best bakery weeks are the ones that lean into the classics.

🍎🍞 Apple Cinnamon Bread — Available Thursday & Friday
Served by the slice and baked with warm cinnamon spice, tender apples, and just enough sweetness to make rainy mornings feel a little softer. Comforting, nostalgic, and perfect with a hot coffee while watching the weather roll through.

☕🥐 Cinnamon Scones — Available Thursday
Buttery, tender scones finished with warm cinnamon spice and just enough sweetness to pair beautifully with coffee or tea. Cozy, crumbly, and exactly the kind of thing you want on a cloudy spring morning.

🍓🥧 Strawberry Rhubarb Pie — Available Thursday, Friday & Saturday
One of spring’s greatest classics returns to the café this week. Sweet strawberries and tart rhubarb baked together into a bubbling, jammy filling tucked inside a buttery crust. Bright, nostalgic, and perfectly balanced between sweet and tangy — this is the kind of pie that disappears quickly around here.

🚚 Friday’s $10 Take-Out Special: Classic Baked Ziti

It only feels right to break in our new house with pasta.

Between the rainy weather, moving boxes stacked to the ceiling, and the kind of week that practically begs for comfort food, this week’s Friday take-out special could really only be one thing: Classic Baked Ziti.

A comforting Italian-American classic inspired by the kind of baked ziti that shows up when it matters most, our version features tender ziti pasta folded into a slow-simmered tomato sauce made with Italian sausage and ground beef, layered with creamy ricotta, mozzarella, and parmesan, then baked until bubbling and golden. Rich, familiar, deeply satisfying, and exactly the kind of meal that somehow tastes even better on a rainy evening.

And listen… we’re not saying we borrowed a few ideas from Carmela Soprano’s cookbook, but let’s just say there may have been a little “Ohhh!” energy happening in the kitchen this week. Big wise guy comfort food vibes all around.

Served as a hearty individual portion and perfect enjoyed at home while pretending your moving boxes are “intentional rustic décor.”

Enjoy this delicious meal with the added perk of free local Friday delivery or easy café pick-up.

As always, thank you for supporting our little café inside the Billings Public Library. Whether you’re stopping in for coffee, lunch, a pastry, or a Friday dinner, we’re grateful to be part of your week.

This week especially feels like one of those chapters we’ll laugh about later — cardboard boxes everywhere, coffee being consumed at medically concerning levels, kids bouncing between family members, and somehow still finding time to make soup and baked ziti in the middle of it all. Moving is chaotic, exhausting, emotional, and exciting all at once, but this community continues to make us feel supported every step of the way.

Thank you for your patience while the café is closed for a few days this week while my family moves into our new home. We’re incredibly excited for this next chapter and can’t wait to reopen the doors, settle back in, and continue serving all of you.

We’ll see you at the café.
