On the afternoon of July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Congress formally approved the final text of the Declaration of Independence. It was ordered to be printed immediately to be sent to every corner of the colonies. From that moment on, the 13 colonies ceased to consider themselves subjects of King George III and self-proclaimed as the United States of America, formally beginning their journey as a sovereign nation.
Meanwhile, in the city's camps, the Declaration of Independence was being celebrated with paella, courtesy of Sergeant Major Fernando de Ortega y Villegas, a native of AlmerΓ­a and member of the Louisiana Infantry Regiment, which was under the command of then-Colonel Bernardo de GΓ‘lvez...
