Villa México Café had its origins in Woburn, Mass. Julie King, owner, manager, cook, cleaner and everything else, moved there with her daughter, Bessie, after her American husband passed away from Alzheimer's. A lawyer in Mexico, Julie could not litigate in Massachusetts without going to school again. However, at that time her daughter's education came before hers. She therefore decided to open a restaurant since she found no good Mexican food in Woburn or its surroundings, or authentic Mexican food for that matter. She went into business with one purpose only: to bring authentic, homemade Mexican food to the people of New England. In 2006 Julie relocated to a gas station store in Beacon Hill. The last gas station in Boston became the notorious home of the "gas station burritos," and at that spot the restaurant earned its "Best Burrito in Boston" title from Boston Phoenix and Improper Bostonian. The gas station was demolished for redevelopment in 2013 and the latest Villa México Café opened in Boston's Financial District on January 11, 2016. During this period the business continued its black salsa sales and catering. Now, still serving authentic Mexican dishes like burritos, quesadillas, tacos, tostadas, fresh fruit waters and more, Villa México Café continues with its mission. To the like (or dislike) of customers, Julie and Bessie say that if they don't eat it in Mexico they won't sell it. Julie has come to be known as Momma King, nurturing customers as friends. To her and to the team the restaurant is not just a business, it is a home and a safe zone; welcoming everyone to eat, to learn, to talk and to make our city better together. As Momma King says, "Hi my friends! Welcome to our 'changarro!'"

Last night, we were delighted to join the The Boston Foundation for the Boston Symphony Orchestra their third Day of the Dead concert. This has become a wonderful tradition, and I enjoyed seeing their altar and friends from different communities! Also good to see Consulado General de México en Boston, and listen to Silvana Estrada and Veronica Robles.

Twenty years ago, when we started sharing our altar and this tradition people would tell us we were worshiping the devil 😅! Slowly but surely, time showed that Dia de Mu***os is about love, remembering through love. And now, to be at this concert and see the Little Boss (my daughter) help set up altars all around the state, is incredible.

Thank you Boston Symphony, we are all human and deserve to be remembered with love, no matter where we come from. Bravo!

Happy Halloween and feliz Dia de Mu***os, friends. We have your candy and food and pan de mu**to today and tomorrow, so COME EAT!

Dear friends, there are 3 days left to nominate a business for a Legacy Business recognition!

A nomination means filling a Google form. That is the first step. Nominations close this Friday, October 30.

Things to know for the form:
🌯we've operated in Boston for 16 years
🌯 we're immigrant, women, family owned
🌯 we're locally owned
🌯 you answer a question: why should we be a Legacy Business?

After the nomination period closes, the Office of Small Business verifies eligibility for all nominees and submits a list of businesses to the City Council.

City Councilors then create a shortlist of potential awardees. Then a committe from the Office of Small Business reviews and submit a list of finalists to Mayor Wu for final selection 😆.

We've applied for 4 years and keep trying, but we need your support to get that nomination. We hope to reach 100 nominations, so that we can have a fair chance of being selected 💪.

The nomination form takes 3 minutes or less to complete (more like 1 minute but it depends on how much you want to say about us!) and it is available in 12 languages.

Please consider nominating us and let's keep our fingers crossed ❤️! Thank you!!!

This summer we had a wonderful visit from friends who came from Maine’s Passamaquoddy Tribe Indian Township. Three generations together to eat burritos before going to the Red Sox 😊!

In México, we learn all about our Indigenous Tribes in grade school, and we still have over 60 federally recognized Indigenous pueblos. Without our Native roots, Mexico wouldn't have its food, art, music, culture... We weren't "discovered." While we, as a family, are Mestizo, with Mexican and Spanish roots, we respect and honor our history and people.

Here in the US it seems harder to do this, but the truth is that we all came from somewhere to the United States-unless you are Native American. That history, culture, and incredible people should also be respected and honored, friends.

Many bad things have happened to our nations through centuries, but we can make things right in the present.

Thank you Matt and family, for your friendship and welcoming spirit. We're lucky to know you ❤️. Read about our friends in this article by the Portland Press Herald: www.pressherald.com/2026/10/07/grants-fund-traditional-wabanaki-art-harvest-practices-now-thats-connection (linked on our story).

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day, friends.
