We couldn't have said this any better. Thanks, Kate, for putting this out there! The Village of Brooklyn, MI and Downtown Brooklyn are such a great place to be!
I want to talk about Brooklyn.
Brooklyn is growing. Our events are attracting new faces, our businesses are evolving, and with growth come new opportunities and challenges.
Growth requires a growth mindset.
Lately, I’ve noticed how much energy can be spent discussing what’s wrong, defending positions, and disagreeing about what needs to change. But I wonder what might happen if we devoted more of that energy to imagining what could go right.
Our thoughts influence our attitudes. Our attitudes shape our actions. And our actions, collectively, shape the community we live in.
So I’d like to invite you to give Brooklyn a Christmas gift.
I know it isn’t even Halloween yet, but downtown businesses are already preparing for Christmas. Shopkeepers will spend their days decorating windows, filling shelves with holiday treasures, and bringing a little extra charm to our village.
I’d love to invite everyone who cares about Brooklyn to meet those efforts with something equally beautiful: 30 days of goodwill, imagination, and blessings for our community.
Throughout November, take a walk through downtown Brooklyn. Look at the storefronts, the historic buildings, the people, and the spaces in between. Notice where Brooklyn is today, and imagine where it could go.
As you walk, take a few quiet moments to meditate on the future you’d love to see.
Imagine a downtown where businesses thrive together, where people feel safe and welcome, where creativity flourishes, and where decisions are made with wisdom and integrity.
Walk with a spirit of blessing.
Whether you purchase something or not, wish good things for the businesses, the residents, the visitors, and the people entrusted with helping our village grow.
Hold a vision of Brooklyn at its very best. Not just as it is, but as it could become.
Hold that vision. Let it guide your actions. And don’t settle for less.
I’m not asking anyone to take sides. I’m simply asking those who love Brooklyn to give a little of their attention, imagination, and goodwill to its future.
Consider it a Christmas gift to our little village. One that costs nothing, but asks something meaningful of each of us.
May blessings rain upon Brooklyn throughout November, and may the Christmas season welcome a new beginning for the village we love.
There’s so much good here, and so much more that’s possible.
With love,
Kate
