I would like to talk about 1938.
88 years ago, Bucksport was a small (Still is!) town with sturdy blue collar roots- Papermaking was an industry that started to grow here, The logging industry was still a rip-roaring market from the length of the Penobscot River on down. We built boats here, Farmed, Construction projects galore... Growth.
Elton "Fats" Crosby and his wife Margaret.
Now, IF the rumors are true- I don't really know for sure, I'm just a young whippersnapper (Some of our elder patrons probably know much more of the TRUE details than me!)
But! The legend around these parts states that Elton, whom people referred to as "Fats" had a food trailer and was on his way to the Blue Hill Fair to sell his tasty food. Misfortune in the way of a flat tire befell the entrepreneur on his journey to the Midway and stranded him on the side of the road.....
Triple A not being a thing- Poor Fats was stuck at the moment, trailer stranded, food waiting and ready to be sold.....
So, being the smarty-pants that he was; Elton set up shop RIGHT at that very spot where fate marooned him and the rest is history!
(Is this true? ehhhhhhhhh........)
However what we DO know is this-
Elton and his wife Margaret owned and operated Crosbys successfully for a number of years, through a couple wars and the growth of the country out of that.
Tom and Helen Christakos took the reins from the 60s and into the 70s, continuing to sell everyone's favorite summertime treats.
In 1980, Tom's nephew- Tom Pappas and his wonderful wife Jen Pappas became the 3rd owners of the storied Regional Institution called as always, Crosbys...
In 2020, Tom and Jen retired and handed the ol' Clam Shack off again, and here we are!
Things come and Go.
Places, People, Businesses, etc. That's life right?
There is one thing that I can say that seems to remain constant throughout the changes that this world throws at us...
Crosbys will be here. You can count on that!
So.
On that note- We are thrilled to ask You to stop on by and say hi, eat something greasy and delicious, and enjoy Crosbys yet again- as we are proud to open for our 88th season in business.....
TOMORROW!
See Ya soon, -the Crosbys Crew
