About Jean: Jean Herko was an army nurse stationed at fort niagara after graduating from the hospital school of nursing in 1939. Jean grew up in the Old First Ward, living in the upstairs part of our building with her sisters when there was a pharmacy in the front. Jean was a 2nd lieutenant in the army air forces and died during WWII. After her death, she was awarded the red cross medal, honoring her service to her country.
